What happens when you put a camera on rich people in lavish locations and film them? There is an entire Bravo TV series franchise that has done so. But scripted series about the same subject matter can go extra far in terms of playing up the crazy. That’s how Netflix’s Sirens goes. The new series stars Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock, Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, Bill Camp, and Glenn Howerton.

Sirens follows Fahy’s Devon, who watches after her dementia-riddled father Bruce, played by Camp. She travels to the home of Michaela and Peter (Moore and Bacon) to talk to her sister Simone, played by Alcock. Simone is Michaela’s (also known as Kiki) assistant. Moore and Kell are incredibly wealthy, while Devon and Simone are not. Devon is a fish out of water in high society, where Simone helps Kiki throw galas and fundraisers for things like The Aviary Foundation. The show is darkly funny and melodramatic with some soap opera aspects.

Sirens also has some surprising moments that kept audiences coming back for more. Here are 10 that caught us completely off guard.Spoiler Warning: The following includes spoilers for Sirens.

10Barnaby Breaking Through the Windows

Kiki is particularly proud of her relationship with the birds on the property. She is the chair of the Aviary Foundation and leads the bird sanctuary. The first episode of the series highlights Kiki’s ability to control her birds. She is showing it off to everyone when she first meets Devon. She lets Barnaby, her prized peregrine falcon, whom she nursed back to health, back into the wild during the episode.

In a metaphor for something strange coming into her house, Devon is looking at Kiki and Peter’s house from a boat. At that moment, Barnaby crashes through Michaela’s large bedroom window. Glass goes flying in slow motion, shocking Kiki. Devon witnesses the entire thing from the boat and runs to the house to look more at the strange place and Simone’s relationship with Kiki.

9Devon Learning Who Morgan Is

Devon travels from Buffalo to the island of Port Haven where Simone is. When she gets there, she meets Kiki and sees the cult-like behavior on the island. She is disturbed, to say the least. Simone doesn’t want to spend time with her or go back to Buffalo with her. Kiki offers her $10,000 to sign an NDA and move on with her life. She begrudgingly agrees to leave, and the property manager and head of security, Jose, drives her to the island hotel where she is to wait until the next day’s ferry.

While waiting there, she decides to pick up someone at the hotel bar. The man pretends to have a yacht of his own. After she sleeps with him, he hands her a sweatshirt to stay warm. She is shocked to see it’s Simone’s sweatshirt. It turns out the man is Morgan, the captain of the boat which is owned by Howerton’s character, Ethan. Morgan tells Devon that Ethan is his boss. Having met Ethan earlier in the day, Devon is happy to have met Morgan, but again, upset her sister is dating someone much older than her.

8Ethan Bringing Bruce and Ray to Cliff House

Ethan goes missing for a day following a meeting he has with Kiki. Simone is beside herself because she overhears Kiki and Peter discussing her relationship with Ethan. She had kept it a secret and is afraid it’s going to be an issue. Ethan hasn’t always been the most faithful man to previous girlfriends, so Kiki is worried about her assistant and friend.

What turns out is that Ethan flew to Buffalo to pick up Bruce and Ray, Devon’s boss and friend, who was looking out for him while she was away. He shows up at his house while the rest of the crew are all there looking for him. He surprises everyone by proposing to Simone. Simone is shocked, to say the least, and doesn’t know how to respond.

7Bruce Acting Like He Knew Kiki

When Ethan brings Bruce and Ray to the house, Bruce immediately perks up upon seeing Kiki. His memory jogs and he acts like he knows her. He talks to her in a sweet way and then gets a little too honest about the woman he thinks she is, much to his daughters’ disgust. Kiki plays right along, acting like she and Ray were old pals.

As he’s talking to her during that scene and one later, it’s revealed that Bruce thinks Kiki is his ex-wife. During these conversations, Kiki gets some therapy out of them, discussing her past with struggling to have children. They are quieter scenes but they both have lasting impacts on the series.

6Simone Divulging How Her Mother Died

Milly Alcock in SirensNetflix

Simone, desperate to get back on Kiki’s good side after not telling her about her relationship with Ethan, decides to tell her how her mother died, finally. As they stand on the beach, Simone delves into the fact that her cover story for her mother’s death, that she died in a car accident, wasn’t truthful. Her mother died by hooking up a tube to the exhaust pipe of her car and feeding it into the car with her inside it.

To Kiki’s shock and horror, Simone reveals that her mother had her in the backseat and just told her to color until she fell asleep. Devon came home from school and found the scene, saving Simone’s life by rushing her out of the car and getting her to a hospital. It’s a sobering moment that gives the audience and Kiki immense sympathy for the horrors Simone and Devon have gone through. Simone was also then neglected by her father while Devon was at college, showing more of the reason why Simone has no interest in helping care for Bruce.

5Devon Learning About Peter’s Ex-Wife

Meghann Fahy and Milly Alcock in SirensNetflix

Devon learns that the entire island thinks that Kiki killed Peter’s first wife, Jocelyn. It’s well-known that Peter’s children from his first marriage hate Kiki and that feeds into the rumors that she is a murderer. One mention of something like that is all that Devon needs to hear to run with the accusations.

During the huge gala, Devon confronts Michaela and calls her out for murdering Peter’s ex-wife, since she hasn’t been seen since she came into the picture. Michaela calmly divulges that Jocelyn has moved to Washington state and prefers to be a recluse now after the divorce. Devon, shocked by the truth but stuck in the argument, has to back down.

4Simone and Peter’s Kiss

Kevin Bacon in SirensNetflix

Kiki suspects that Peter is having an affair after she uncovers that he lied about a business trip. She enlists Simone to tail him on a trip into town. Peter ends up just running a bunch of errands and eventually spots Simone tailing him. He engages her and tells her to join him as he goes quahogging. While the two are in the water, he lets her know that he hasn’t been having an affair, but he went to see his kids.

Knowing that Kiki doesn’t like them and vice versa, he felt the need to sneak around behind her back. Simone gives a very sympathetic reply, and the two share a nice moment. But Peter ruins it by kissing Simone at the end of the encounter. (Did we mention Peter and Ethan are best friends?) Simone awkwardly runs away, knowing she is caught in the middle.

3The Vanity Fair Photographer Showing Kiki the Photo

Julianne Moore in SirensNetflix

Earlier in the series, staffers from Vanity Fair are at Cliff House to do a photo shoot for a story on Peter, Michaela, and the gala. Devon meets the photographer at the pre-party for it. The photographer shows up again a few episodes later, saying he needs to show Kiki the prints to sign off on them. Throughout the episode, he is mentioned and even checked up on by Devon and Simone. But he is left in the other room for hours.

Finally, during one of the biggest moments of the series, he is found trying to talk to Michaela while she’s handling a crisis. He shoves an envelope in her face, saying that she wants to look at the photo he took. It’s a photo of Simone and Peter kissing, which he says he snapped while filming B roll for the shoot. Michaela promises him money if he leaves and she takes the picture.

2Ethan Falling off the Cliff

Glenn Howerton and Milly Alcock in SirensNetflix

After Simone rejects Ethan’s wedding proposal, he disappears. Later in the episode, he is seen sitting alone in the backyard, drunk and abrasive. Simone offers to get him home safely, but he mocks her and drunkenly stumbles as he curses her. He eventually gets too close to the edge of the grounds and falls all the way down the cliff to the beach.

It’s an eerie callback to a dream that Simone had, where the same scenario occurred. Ethan survives, and Simone and Peter go to visit him in the hospital. But he wants nothing to do with Simone, as he blames her for the injuries. Peter tells off his best friend and protects Simone from further abuse from him.

1Peter Ending Things with KiKi

Peter had gotten involved with Kiki while he was still married to Jocelyn. After Kiki receives the photo from the Vanity Fair photographer, she has all of Simone’s belongings packed up and she unceremoniously fires her. Simone seems devastated and Peter feels blindsided that Simone is gone. But what Kiki doesn’t realize is that Peter is the more successful one, and he will do what he wants.

Simone catches up with Peter and it’s revealed that he confessed his love for her and agreed to kick Kiki to the side. He eventually meets with his wife and tells her it’s over, much to the surprise of Kiki. Devon comes to the gala to see Simone with Peter and Simone admits that she moved on from Kiki because she no longer served her a purpose. It’s a huge twist that showed Simone had ingrained herself in high society and played the game better than Kiki. Kiki and Devon have one final chat as they both take a ferry back to the mainland.
