What’s happening in season 3 of The Diplomat?

At the close of season 2 in 2024, the formidable Grace Penn (Allison Janney) became President of the United States after President William Rayburn’s fatal heart attack.

With big changes in the air, season 3 picks right up with Kate (Keri Russell) accusing Penn of a terrorist act, as well as admitting her desire to become vice president.

However, with Hal (Rufus Sewell) having delivered news of Penn’s actions to President Rayburn directly before his passing, could he have accidentally caused the commander-in-chief’s demise? Still, his campaign to get Kate the vice-presidency rolls on, and Kate finds herself in deep water as she achieves freedom she never expected, and complicated bonds with new contacts.

The official teaser for The Diplomat‘s third outing was released in June, before a date announcement video in August gave fans even more insight into what’s to come.

What have the cast and creative team said about The Diplomat season 3?

Ahead of the new season’s release, The Diplomat‘s cast and creative team alike have dropped hints about how this run will differ from the first two.

Back in November 2024, series star Keri Russell told Netflix’s Skip Intro podcast about the all-encompassing filming process.

“We’re shooting some stuff already in Season 3 that involves big groups and lots of people, and we do tend to rehearse those [scenes],” she noted. “It’s such rapid-fire diplomatic speak that we make sure that everyone’s on the same page and knows what we’re actually talking about.”

Elsewhere, showrunner and creator Debora Cahn has teased that season 3 “flips the chessboard”, telling Netflix outlet Tudum: “In season 3, Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”

New cast member Bradley Whitford also told the outlet that he was “thrilled” to hear Debora Cahn wanted him involved.

“I had no idea what it was, but I love the show,” he shared. “I was jealous of the writing on this show. I love Keri. I love Rufus. And I hear Allison Janney is good at acting too. It’s an amazing cast.”

Diplomat fans, there’s not much longer to wait – The Diplomat season 3 will be available to stream on Netflix from Thursday 16 October.
