Will the real Slim Shady please stand up head to the closest movie theater?
A documentary about Eminem a.k.a. Marshall Mathers a.k.a. Slim Shady will be released exclusively in AMC Theaters for a limited run from Aug. 7 through Aug. 10.
Titled “Stans,” after the rapper’s hit song about an obsessive, unhinged superfan, the film will explore Eminem’s career through the eyes of his most devoted supporters. (Since the single’s release in 2000, the term “stan” has entered the lexicon — and was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017 — as a word for an obsessed fan. However unlike the song’s message, it’s usually used now as a term of endearment.) AMC Theatres Distribution, which launched after the release of Taylor Swift’s concert documentary “The Eras Tour” and Beyonce’s “Renaissance,” is handling the theatrical rollout in the U.S. More than 135 AMC locations will offer at least two showtimes per day. Due to the film’s limited run, “Stans” will not be eligible for AMC Stubs A-List reservations or discount tickets. The film will also receive a full week awards-qualifying run at New York’s AMC Empire 25.
Trafalgar Releasing will launch “Stans” internationally on the same date with 1,600 theaters expected to show the film across 50 territories.
Directed by Steven Leckart, “Stans” was described in a press release as an examination of the “complicated relationship between one of the world’s most private artists and his massive public persona.” The filmmaker uses recreations, archival footage and new interviews to explore the highs and lows of Eminem’s career. The 15-time Grammy winner, for songs including “Lose Yourself,” “Without Me,” “Stan,” “Real Slim Shady” and “Love the Way You Lie,” served as a producer on “Stans” with Paul Rosenberg, Stuart Parr, Antoine Fuqua, Tony DiSanto, David Schiff.
