Middle school student dies after fight at bus stop, family says
A middle school student in Georgia died after a fight with another student, according to police.
Villa Rica police said the fight happened Thursday evening between two students from Mason Creek Middle School, about 30 miles west of Atlanta.
The fight happened in a neighborhood near campus.
In a Facebook post, the victim’s family identified her as 12-year-old Jada West. Her family said she suffered a severe brain injury.
The family posted a video that shows Jada getting into a verbal argument with another girl after the two got off the school bus. Eventually, the confrontation turns physical.
Jada is seen standing up and walking away from the fight, but her family said before she could make it home, “her heart stopped.”
Photos and videos shared by the family show Jada lying in a hospital bed on life support before she died.
Jada’s aunt wrote in another Facebook post, “You were so young, so loved, and you did not deserve this. I am going to miss you, your presence, and the love you brought to our family.
The Douglas County School System said the fight was not related to any on-campus activity.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to her family and loved ones during this difficult time. She will be remembered by her teachers, her classmates and all who knew her,” the district said.
The district said a crisis team will be available at Mason Creek Middle School.
It’s unclear whether the other student involved is facing charges or why the fight started.
The investigation is ongoing.
