The father of Charmaine’s twins in Virgin River was a mystery until the recent reveal in season 5 – it turned out to be Calvin. The books hinted that the father could be Dr. Cameron, but the Netflix adaptation took a different route.
The shocking twist of Calvin being the father adds a complex dynamic to Charmaine’s relationships and sets up future storylines in the next two seasons.
Who is the father of Charmaine’s twins in Virgin River was one of the Netflix show’s biggest mysteries, but the answer rested in the original books. Based on the romance novels by Robyn Carr, Virgin River follows nurse practitioner Mel, who moves to the titular town for a new start after the death of her husband. While Virgin River is presented as a typical small town, it is home to many mysteries, and more importantly, plenty of drama.
One of the biggest mysteries in Virgin River season 5 was discovering who the father of Charmaine’s unborn twins is. Throughout the first four seasons, Charmaine claimed the father was Jack, but at the end of Virgin River season 4, she reveals that she lied about this. The episode ended right after Charmaine’s big reveal, meaning audiences got no sense of who the real father was. While there are plenty of fan theories about the father’s identity, the answer might have already been revealed in Virgin River’s books.
The Virgin River Books Suggest The Father Could Be Dr. Cameron
Surprisingly, Virgin River’s original books might have hinted at the father of Charmaine’s twins being Dr. Cameron. A newcomer to Virgin River season 4, Dr. Cameron is the second doctor at Doc’s practice before he resigns at the end of the season. However, Dr. Cameron’s arc in the Virgin River books could potentially position him to be the father of Charmaine’s twins, which would greatly shake up the dynamic of Netflix’s Virgin River, as it would give Dr. Cameron a reason to dislike Jack as well as stay in the titular town.
In the Virgin River books, Dr. Cameron also gets a woman pregnant with twins. This woman doesn’t appear in the Netflix adaptation and there isn’t currently any evidence that Dr. Cameron has been to Virgin River prior to season 4, so the Dr. Cameron theory doesn’t perfectly line up. However, the details of Dr. Cameron’s book storyline align a little too closely with the details of Charmaine’s pregnancy arc to be a coincidence. It’s not unheard of for adaptations to create composite characters or storylines, so it could be possible that Netflix combined both storylines for the show.
Why The Twins’ Father Was Still Up For Debate In Virgin River Season 5
Even though the Virgin River books suggest that the twins’ father could be Dr. Cameron, the identity of the twins’ father was a mystery going into Virgin River season 5. Though the books seemed to point to Dr. Cameron as possibly being the father of Charmaine’s twins, misaligned details in the Netflix show made him an unlikely suspect. One fan theory pointed to Mike, but since there’s no evidence outside of Mike reacting strangely to Charmaine’s pregnancy, the father is not conclusively him. There’s even less evidence for other suspects, like Brady, making the twins’ father a huge debate in Virgin River.
The true parentage of Charmaine’s twins was one of the biggest questions in Virgin River season 5, and for good reason. Although it might be frustrating for fans after Charmaine has had such a long, dramatic pregnancy, keeping the father’s identity ambiguous was important, as the mystery allowed for the answer to be even more satisfying when the twins’ father eventually came to light. Netflix’s Virgin River is a romantic soap opera at its core, and keeping huge bombshells like the real father of Charmaine’s twins a secret until the time is right will make it even juicier when it is revealed.
Season 5 Revealed The Father Of Charmaine’s Twins
That meant that, when Virgin River finally revealed the father of Charmaine’s twins, it came as an expected shock since it wasn’t Mike or Dr. Cameron. Instead, Calvin is the father of Charmaine’s twins. This reveal arrived in episode 10 at the end of the episode when Charmaine saw Calvin and said she thought he was dead. That was when Calvin responded that the person who tried to kill him thought he was dead too. However, he said he didn’t have to hide from her anymore, and he was back to being a father to his boys. Director Gail Harvey said this was a big moment that will play out in the next two seasons (via EW).
“It’s going to be complicated. That’s probably something that we’ll get into more in season 6. That’s what I love about Virgin River. It’s all the twists and turns… What will that mean for her relationship with Jack and Mel and how will Calvin be? The whole thing with Brady. All of it is very, very complex.”
There was also nothing in Virgin River leading to this shocking moment. The next big mystery surrounding Charmaine was why she was with Calvin to begin with, and what he really wants with her now. Based on his past on the show, there is no way he cares about the twins and there has to be something he wants or needs from Charmaine now that he has come out of hiding.
