A Former American Idol Contestant Is Accused of Killing His Wife. Here’s What We Know About Suspect Caleb Flynn.
Flynn spoke lovingly of wife Ashley on the popular reality show, but is now charged in her death.

Less than one year after an American Idol music supervisor and her husband were shot and killed inside their home, the popular reality TV show is tied to another deadly tragedy in which a former contestant is accused of murdering his wife.
According to WHIO TV 7 in Dayton, Ohio, Caleb Flynn, 39, was arrested on Thursday, February 19, and is accused of killing his wife Ashley Flynn, 37, inside their home in Tipp City, Ohio. He pleaded not guilty at his video arraignment on Friday from the Miami County Jail.
Here’s what we know so far about Ashley’s death, Caleb’s arrest and charges, and what he previously said about her on the popular reality show.
Who Is Ashley Flynn, and How Was She Killed?
Caleb Flynn is accused of killing his wife Ashley Flynn in the early morning of Monday, February 16.
According to the Dayton Daily News, police arrived at the family’s home in response to an emergency call about a robbery in progress. Tipp City Police Chief Greg Adkins previously confirmed Ashley was pronounced dead at the scene with two gunshot wounds. There were also signs of forced entry into the home.
Officials have offered little details about the investigation, but court records show Caleb is suspected of tampering with the crime scene. He was questioned about the deadly encounter prior to his arrest. “The family and community deserve a thorough, professional and compassionate investigation into this very sensitive matter,” Adkins said in a statement Thursday. “As a result of the investigation, probable cause existed to charge Caleb Flynn with the murder of his wife.”
It’s not clear when Caleb and Ashley married, but a TV interview with American Idol suggests it was sometime prior to 2013. The couple also have two daughters, who were both home at the time of Ashley’s killing.
When Did Flynn Appear on American Idol?
Little is known about Flynn’s childhood and background. He is also a graduate of Lee University.
Most notably, Flynn appeared as a contestant on the 12th season of the reality singing competition show American Idol in 2013. A short video clip about his time on the show is still active on the program’s YouTube page:
During the interview, Flynn reveals he had tried out for the show once prior but didn’t make it past first auditions. He cites former winner and current judge Carrie Underwood as his favorite prior contestant.
Flynn also mentions his previous job as a music pastor and complements his wife repeatedly throughout the two-minute soundbite.
“I absolutely love the Lord. I love my wife more than anything. She is very, very pretty. Just… oof, I love her,” he says. “But, you know, I’m just a normal person who absolutely loves to sing more than anything in the world, and I think I have a different sound to my voice.”
Flynn was cut shortly into the competition and didn’t make it to the live rounds.
When Is Flynn Expected to Be in Court?
According to his LinkedIn profile, Flynn worked as a vice president of sales for Richard D. Smith & Sons Inc., a family-run supplier for commercial flooring and worship seats.
A judge set Flynn’s bond at $2 million, though his attorney called the total “unnecessarily high” and plans to seek a reduction. Flynn is expected in court for a preliminary hearing on Thursday, February 26.
