Jack Reacher author Lee Child admitted one thing Tom Cruise has that Alan Ritchson will never have

Jack Reacher author Lee Child acknowledged that fans were right to criticize Tom Cruise’s casting, citing the character’s imposing size as a key factor. While praising Cruise’s performance, Child admitted that Alan Ritchson is a better physical match for the role.

Lee Child acknowledged that Jack Reacher fans were “right” to disapprove of Tom Cruise’s casting in the film adaptations.

Before Alan Ritchson took on the role in Amazon’s hit Prime Video series, Cruise portrayed the towering action hero in two movies: ‘Jack Reacher’ (2012) and ‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back’ (2016).
A segment of Jack Reacher fans felt that Tom Cruise wasn’t the right fit for the role, primarily due to his height. In Lee Child’s books, Reacher is described as “extremely tall” at 6ft 5in, with “extremely broad, long-armed and long-legged” features—whereas Cruise stands at 5ft 7in.

In an interview addressing the backlash to Cruise’s casting, Child acknowledged that while he “liked” working with the actor, “the readers, ultimately, were right” in their criticism.

“I thought the first movie in particular was excellent,” Child said. “It was a really crisp hard-edged thriller. Working with Tom was a pleasure and a privilege – he’s a really smart guy, he’s a smart filmmaker, he’s real fun. But you cannot escape the fact that Reacher is a huge guy.”

Elaborating further, Child added, “I mean, that is a component in his entire approach to the world and the world’s approach to him. He’s huge, he’s implacable, he’s scary, and for all Tom’s ability in getting the internals of Reacher out, he is not huge and he’s not scary. So the readers were terribly upset about it and I think, ultimately, the readers were right.”

The author believes Alan Ritchson, who has taken over the role in Amazon’s ‘Reacher’ series, is the perfect fit. Ritchson is set to return for a third season, based on Persuader, the seventh book in the series. Child expressed confidence in the casting, stating, “Alan was born to play Reacher and I think he knows that.”

Fans are especially excited about this adaptation due to the presence of Paulie, a rare antagonist who is even larger than Reacher. In the books, few characters surpass Reacher in size, making Paulie a formidable opponent.

Casting the role presented challenges, but Dutch bodybuilder Olivier Richters, who stands at 7ft 1in, was ultimately chosen to portray him. His towering presence contrasts with Alan Ritchson’s 6ft 2in frame, making for an intense on-screen dynamic.

“That’s the perfect illustration of how easy it is for me and how hard it is for them because all I have to do is type different words – it costs me nothing,” Child said.

“Whereas to put that into physical reality on the screen, they’ve got to find that actor. It was literally an international search. There are very few actors even Alan’s size so to get somebody who is noticeably bigger was incredibly difficult. But they found the guy. He is huge! And very scary.”

Child reassured fans that “there is no trickery at all on the screen” when bringing Paulie to life.

“There are no fancy camera angles. There’s no CGI. Alan looks tiny next to this guy and to find that was a triumph,” Child stated.

‘Reacher’ season three premieres on Prime Video on February 20.
