Netflix’s political thriller ‘Zero Day’ is packed with drama, but many cast members have found their happy endings off-screen

Trust is at the heart of any good relationship — and it’s hard to come by in Zero Day. But luckily, many members of the show’s cast have found their ride-or-dies in real life.

The Robert De Niro-led Netflix thriller Zero Day, which premiered on Feb. 20, was created by Eric Newman (who also executive produced heart-pumping shows like American Primeval and Narcos). The series follows the aftermath of a devastating cyberattack that killed thousands of people across the country.

Former U.S. President George Mullen (De Niro) is pulled out of retirement to lead a commission tasked with uncovering the perpetrators. But disinformation, a web of conspiracies and long-buried secrets threaten to hinder his search for the truth.

While this on-screen crew may be full of drama, the cast’s real-life relationships are much more stable. Here’s everything to know about the partners of the Zero Day cast.

Robert De Niro and Tiffany Chen

Robert De Niro has been with martial arts instructor Tiffany Chen since 2021. They met while on the set of his 2015 movie The Intern, where she had a minor role, and started dating after his 2018 split from ex-wife Grace Hightower.

The Goodfellas star welcomed his seventh child, Gia Virginia Chen De Niro, with Chen in April 2023. De Niro told The Sunday Times in 2025 that he spends his mornings feeding his youngest daughter and “watching Ms. Rachel.”

Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst

Jesse Plemons, who plays George’s former aide Roger on Zero Day, has been married to actress Kirsten Dunst since 2022. The couple started dating after they played a married couple on season 2 of Fargo in 2015. They also starred in the critically acclaimed Netflix film The Power of the Dog together in 2021.

Even though they didn’t get together until a year and a half after meeting on Fargo, Plemons told The New York Times in 2020 that he knew Dunst would be in his life “for a long time.”

Lizzy Caplan has been married to The Nevers actor Tom Riley since 2017. The pair first met in London, where the Mean Girls actress was filming the 2015 war drama Allied. Two years later, they wed in a star-studded ceremony in Italy.

Caplan and Riley welcomed their son Alfie in 2021, and she told PEOPLE that having a family shifted her priorities. “I have a baby, [am] married,” Caplan said in 2023. “That part of my life is the most important part of my life, where in the past, work was the most important part.”

Connie Britton, who plays George’s former chief of staff Valerie Whitesell in Zero Day, has been dating writer and producer David E. Windsor (from This Is Us and Not Dead Yet) since 2019. They met after being “set up” at a friend’s birthday party.

“So I’m talking to my friend and he looks past me and he sees David across the room and he is like, ‘There’s someone here you have to meet,’ ” she told Andy Cohen during a 2023 interview on Radio Andy. “And it was like, I’ll never forget that moment because I turned around and I looked at who he was pointing at and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I wanna meet him.’ “

Britton also said that Windsor had stepped into a “more paternal role” with her son, Yoby, whom she adopted in 2011.

Joan Allen

In Zero Day, Joan Allen plays former first lady Sheila Mullen. Though she’s married to De Niro on-screen, in real life she hasn’t been publicly linked to anyone since her divorce from Succession star Peter Friedman in 2002, per The New York Times. The former couple share one daughter, actress Sadie Friedman.

The Room actress told Vanity Fair in February 2025 that she’s taken a gradual step back from her career to focus on her personal life.

“If somebody said … ‘You have to choose your personal life versus your professional life,’ even in my 20s—certainly in my 30s—I would’ve said my personal life,” Allen said. “That always matters most to me. I’m enjoying time with my family, and I’m in California now visiting my sister who I didn’t get to do that with for years. I want to take advantage of those moments.”

Dan Stevens and Susie Stevens

When Dan Stevens — who plays divisive political show TV host Evan Green in Zero Day — met jazz singer Susie Stevens in 2006, he said their connection was “pretty instant.”

“I’m lucky to be married to someone who entirely gets what I do,” the Downton Abbey star told The Telegraph in 2011. “She is totally sympathetic to the actor’s life. Her own mother was an actress, so she sort of grew up with it.”

The couple share three children, as he told Den of Geek in 2024.

Matthew Modine, who plays Speaker of the House Richard Dreyer in Zero Day, has been married to makeup and wardrobe stylist Caridad Rivera since 1980. The couple have two children, actress Ruby Modine (Shameless) and director Boman Modine (Angels of Death).

The Stranger Things actor told Variety in February 2025 that he credits his wife for helping him find the best roles.

“Well, I have to give a great amount of props to my wife because whenever I was working, she was reading, looking for material,” he said. “I’m sorry to say that I didn’t take her advice a couple of times for movies that were incredible that I wish that I had done.”

Angela Bassett, who plays President Evelyn Mitchell in Zero Day, has been married to American Crime Story actor Courtney B. Vance since 1997. While the couple originally met in the 1980s when they were both Yale School of Drama graduate students, they didn’t start dating until 1994. Bassett told PEOPLE in 2023 that she can always count on her husband’s support.

“He understands just empirically everything that I go through,” the 9-1-1 actress said. “He can really give me perspective, because it gets very heady and very busy, but he just keeps me very grounded about the important things, that life is good and we’re all just doing our best to support each other.”

In 2006, the couple welcomed fraternal twins Bronwyn Golden Vance and Slater Josiah Vance.
