Landman Season 2 Officially Reveals Its New Billy Bob Thornton Replacement Landman Billy Bob Thornton Hat

The following contains spoilers for Landman Season 2, Episode 5, “The Pirate Dinner,” which premiered on Paramount+ on Sunday, December 14, 2025.

Taylor Sheridan has filled Billy Bob Thornton’s iconic role from Landman Season 1 with a different character, replacing Tommy Norris in Season 2. The oil drama has been enjoying a massive sophomore run, with Landman Season 2’s premiere breaking records for its streaming platform, amassing 9.2 million viewers in its first two days on Paramount+.

The landscape of Monty Miller’s (Jon Hamm) business looks drastically different in Landman Season 2, with Tommy Norris stepping up to run M-Tex Oil as its president. However, with Cami (Demi Moore) still owning the company, she and Tommy are beginning to butt heads, adding to Norris’ plate and justifying his replacement in Season 2.

In Landman Season 2, Episode 5, it comes to Tommy’s attention that he has too much on his docket. Between his mother’s funeral, Cooper’s (Jacob Lofland) turmoil, and his new duties as M-Tex’s president, which include sparring with Gallino (Andy Garcia), Tommy contends with how his role has shifted in “The Pirate Dinner,” prompting him to make some changes.

As T.L. (Sam Elliott) settles into the house, Tommy also adjusts to new circumstances. Tommy realizes he isn’t getting updates on what’s happening in the oil patch, contrasting with having his finger on the pulse last season. Norris was the first person called in Landman Season 1 when something went wrong, since he was in charge of making it right.

However, Tommy is left in the dark in Landman Season 2, and not just about what’s happening in the oil fields. Norris also realizes that his legal team, Nate (Colm Feore) and Rebecca (Kayla Wallace), haven’t given him the full scope of their legal issues, since they used to update the former president later in their legal processes.

In Landman Season 2, Episode 5, as Tommy realizes he has too much on his plate, he chooses his replacement as M-Tex’s go-to problem fixer. Despite striking oil in the premiere of Landman Season 2, Cooper has been navigating some financial issues, with Tommy uncovering that Gallino’s financial institution, Sonrisa, has a deal to cover his son’s debt.

However, Tommy works around Cooper’s bad deal in “The Pirate Dinner,” confronting his son about how he has unwittingly billed all of his oil endeavors to M-Tex. Seeing an opportunity to relieve Cooper of his Sonrisa deal, Tommy proposes that M-Tex Oil officially take over Cooper’s wells, freeing his son up for a new position.

Tommy reveals to his son at the Patch Cafe that he wants him to take over his role as the oil company’s landman. It’s an opportunity for Tommy to shed some of his former responsibilities while providing his son with a new position that aligns with Cooper Norris’ long-term strategy to run an oil company.

While Cooper is hesitant, saying he wants to own a company instead, Tommy convinces his son that he needs to learn every part of the oil business to run a company properly. Ultimately, Cooper accepts the position, complete with the perks of a $9,000/month salary, effectively changing the guard for Thornton’s Landman Season 1 role.

How Landman’s New Fixer Changes Taylor Sheridan’s Oil Drama

Cooper Norris, played by Jacob Lofland, stands out of breath while the camp surrounds him in Landman

Cooper’s replacement of his father as M-Tex Oil’s landman and fixer will have a massive impact on the series. Perhaps that was always the design co-creators Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace had in mind for Landman Season 2: to watch Tommy and Cooper simultaneously take their careers to new heights, evolving beyond their roles and responsibilities in Season 1.

The development will add new layers to existing storylines, with Tommy and Cooper becoming co-workers while building on their relationship as father and son. It’s similar to how John Dutton (Kevin Costner) mentored his son, Kayce (Luke Grimes), when Dutton Jr. came to work at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, promoting new ways for the Yellowstone characters to intersect.

Cooper’s adjustment in Landman will bode well for his relationship with single mother Ariana Medina (Paulina Chavez), who had reservations about her potential husband becoming a millionaire. As M-Tex’s new landman, Cooper will earn roughly $108,000, which is a far cry from the $10 million that sent Ariana running for the hills, wanting to preserve her humble lifestyle.

Primarily, with Lofland stepping into Thornton’s role, which gained Landman so much attention in Season 1, audiences can expect a wealth of character growth from Cooper Norris in Season 2. Audiences can also expect the Norris family tree to share even more scenes with the arrangement, as Tommy teaches Cooper all the tricks of the trade.
