Netflix’s New Period Drama for ‘Succession’ Fans Lands Sparkling Rotten Tomatoes Debut

Edward pours beer in House of Guinness

Netflix may have finally found its answer to Succession, as reviews for their latest series have begun to surface ahead of its streaming debut. The period drama follows the whirlwind aftermath of the death of the Guinness family patriarch during the 1800s. It is up to the children of Sir Benjamin Guinness to take over the family business, and deal with the cutthroat nature of the industry.

As of this writing, Netflix’s House of Guinness has landed on Rotten Tomatoes with an 86% rating based on seven reviews. Created by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), a review from Collider praised the series as a “breath of fresh air” bolstered by impressive performances of its “terrific cast.” The show, which takes place in 19th-century Dublin, features a soundtrack “full of Irish punk classics,” along with “a young, attractive cast, and a flair for dramatic cinematography,” according to Nerdspin. Meanwhile, mundoCine gave an overall positive review of Knight’s latest work, but concluded that “he falls a good step short of the excellence we’ve come to expect from him.”

Of course, not everyone is in love with House of Guinness. Despite the show being flashy, some don’t believe that it lives up to its potential. Film Stories says that the period drama “might be frothy, but it lacks the smoothness of a proper pint.” Still, with only one rotten review on Rotten Tomatoes thus far, House of Guinness is positioning itself as a worthy entry in Netflix’s vast library. Time will tell if it lives up to the comparisons to HBO’s Succession, which is considered one of the best shows in recent memory.
