One person has been recovered and another remains missing after a fishing boat capsized off Cape Cod Thursday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard said two Good Samaritans alerted authorities about the overturned vessel shortly before noon. The Yankee Rose had two people onboard when it capsized roughly three nautical miles northeast of Race Point in Provincetown, the agency said.
Minutes later, local authorities and crews from the Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod arrived to search for the two people. They later recovered one unconscious person, who was rushed to “higher medical care,” the Coast Guard said.
That person’s condition was not immediately clear; the search for the second individual, an unidentified man, remains ongoing.
Around 3:48 p.m., a Coast Guard helicopter crew confirmed the Yankee Rose sank with an adjacent debris field.
“Our thoughts are with the families of the crew of the F/V Yankee Rose and the local fishing community,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. Thomas Wieland, the rescue mission coordinator. “Coast Guard crews are continuing to search the area, and we remain committed to doing everything possible to locate the missing mariner.”
Gov. Maura Healey said she was “heartbroken” to hear of Thursday’s incident and shared her gratitude for the emergency crews who “jumped into action” to help with the search.
“This is another devastating reminder of the dangers that come with life at sea and another tragedy for Massachusetts’ fishing industry and the families who make their living on the water, especially so soon after the loss of the Lily Jean in Gloucester,” she said. “Every time a vessel leaves the harbor, families understand the risks that come with this work, and moments like this are felt deeply across the entire industry.”
Just last week, the Yankee Rose was the focus of another emergency when two people onboard were hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning. Both were taken to a local hospital and later discharged.
