Now on Netflix: One Character’s Return in Wednesday Season 2 Misses the Point of the Show 🖤
Fans are buzzing after learning that a familiar face will be back at Nevermore — but not everyone’s thrilled. While the return promises nostalgia, some argue it undercuts the dark, self-discovery journey that made Wednesday Season 1 so iconic. ⚡
Is this comeback a win for fan service, or does it risk unraveling the show’s original edge? 🕷️
Wednesday season 2 features the return of several fan-favorites from the show’s debut installment, but one character’s change of behavior isn’t adding up. The latest chapter of the Netflix series is still set at Nevermore Academy, with Wednesday season 2 introducing a few new characters. Among the newcomers is Agnes, the leader of Wednesday’s fan club, who is later revealed to be a stalker.
Agnes’ power of invisibility marks one of Wednesday season 2’s new Outcasts species, and it’s an ability Wednesday probably wishes she had, considering her newfound popularity. While Wednesday is welcomed back by her peers after saving the school, her brother Pugsley doesn’t fare as well. Despite his more friendly demeanor, one character surprisingly makes his time at Nevermore more difficult.
Eugene’s Treatment Of Pugsley Doesn’t Make Sense In Wednesday Season 2

When Pugsley arrives at Nevermore Academy for his first year, he finds that he’s assigned to Eugene’s dorm room. At first, the pairing seems quite perfect, but when Pugsley tries to get to know his roommate better, Eugene brushes him off. Eugene’s initial treatment of Pugsley seems very out of character, especially considering he didn’t fit in with his classmates in season 1.
Aside from Enid, Eugene was one of Wednesday’s only real friends, at least during season 1. The pair bonded since they were both outsiders among even the Outcasts around them. More importantly, Eugene reminded Wednesday of her own little brother. Though Eugene agrees to room with Pugsley as a “favor” to Wednesday, the niceties stop there.

In addition to showing that he has no interest in getting to know Pugsley, Eugene also acts annoyed with his new roommate and his interests. Seeing as Eugene knows what it’s like to not have friends at Nevermore, it’s very odd to see him treat Pugsley so poorly. If anything, he should be more willing to take Pugsley under his wing like Wednesday did for him.
Eugene’s Character Change Hurts One Of Wednesday’s Biggest Themes

Looking deeper beyond Eugene’s attitude toward Pugsley, the behavior also goes against one of the most meaningful themes in Wednesday. Nevermore Academy is meant to be a safe haven for outsiders, especially those not accepted by Normies. While there will always be bullying in school settings, Eugene should know better than anyone that bonding with fellow Outcasts goes a long way.
Eugene was directly involved in trying to stop a resurrected Joseph Crackstone from eradicating all Outcasts in Wednesday season 1’s ending. Rather than help strengthen the Outcast community in Wednesday season 2, Eugene is feeding into the stereotypical treatment of Outcasts as if he’s a Normie, weirded out by Pugsley’s interests.
