Navigating your formative adolescent years is difficult enough, but add in a turbulent love triangle that involves two brothers, and there are some tough lessons to be learned. Upon arrival in Colorado, viewers are introduced to Katherine (Sarah Lafferty) and George Walter (Marc Blucas), Jackie’s guardians, and their boisterous family, which consists of 10 boys and one girl. These subsequent shots also introduce Alex (Gentry), the sweetheart and “nice guy who finishes last” type of character, and Cole (LaLonde), the cool and perplexing bad boy type, a must-have ingredient in YA stories. While Jackie seems to find Alex’s presence comforting and someone she can relate to, both intellectually and emotionally, there’s this gravitational pull she feels towards Cole, someone who challenges her and feels enigmatic to her.

It’s impossible to ignore the similarities between Alex and Jeremiah, and between Cole and Conrad. Like The Summer I Turned Pretty, there’s a harsh line between viewers who are Team Alex and those who are Team Cole, and the debate is equally juicy. Both Series Emphasize the Significance and Importance of Chosen Family

Right from the get-go, viewers can feel the tight-knit bond between the Conklin and Fisher families in The Summer I Turned Pretty​​. Laurel Park (Jackie Chung) and Susannah Fisher (Rachel Blanchard) have known each other since their college days and have been best friends since, spending holidays with each other and traveling to Cousins each summer to reconvene and spend time with each other and their kids before the next school year. Their kids, Belly, Conrad, Jeremiah, and Steven (Sean Kaufman), look at each other as family despite not being blood-related, demonstrating that chosen family is equally valuable as blood-related family.

In My Life With the Walter Boys, the chosen family theme is also prevalent from the beginning. Jackie’s parents decided to grant guardianship to Katherine and George Walter in the event of their death instead of Jackie’s uncle, Richard (Alex Quijano). The adjustment period to this new environment and family dynamic is difficult for Jackie, but throughout Season 1, viewers can see her gradually start to open up to her new reality, even choosing to stay with the Walter family after hearing about Katherine’s backstory involving her adoption and recognizing that her chosen family is beautiful and precious and that she shouldn’t take it for granted. Based on the Season 2 trailer, Jackie will return to Colorado and try to repair the damage after Season 1 in the hopes of keeping her chosen family.
