Jaws human

Steven Spielberg’s beloved movie Jaws has been swimming from one streaming home to another this year, and now it has resurfaced at Netflix. The film has also brought along its sequels, for better or for worse. Currently, Jaws is now streaming on Netflix, joined by Jaws 2Jaws 3, and Jaws: The Revenge. While the sequels are not as revered, Jaws has been one of cinema history’s most celebrated films for several decades. This year, the film reached its 50th anniversary, resulting in special screenings with Jaws getting re-released in theaters for the occasion. Netflix subscribers who didn’t get to take part in celebrating 50 years of Jaws just yet can now do so as well.

Perhaps one person who will be streaming Jaws on Netflix is filmmaker James Gunn, whose Superman movie just made a big splash upon arrival in theaters. While promoting the film, Gunn spoke about some of his favorite movies in a new video posted online, via Konbini. After praising Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, which he dubbed a “perfect” movie, Gunn spotted Jaws, prompting the director to explain why he also sees the Spielberg classic as another masterpiece.

Jaws Combines “Grounded” With “Spectacle”

“Speaking of perfect, it’s one of the most perfect films of all time: Jaws,” Gunn said. “I think this movie speaks to me especially, because I love the golden age of 70s American cinema. I love that grounded natural feeling to those movies, to movies like The GodfatherThe Thomas Crown Affair, starting with Bonne & Clyde and going through Jaws, which was the crossover between that 70s grounded area film, and then the spectacle, which started with Jaws, and it is both. Which is why I think it’s such an important film. It is both grounded, and it’s a spectacle film. And then, everything got ruined after that.”

Jaws was based on the book by Peter Benchley. The movie tells the story of a man-eating great white shark attacking beachgoers one fateful summer. To fight back, a police chief (Roy Scheider) hires a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw) to track down the sea creature, leading to an explosive confrontation in the water. The plot is not deep, but the execution of the film was widely seen as flawless, forever making Jaws one of the most popular movies ever made.

Scheider returned for the first sequel. The third movie did not bring back any original actors, but it featured Louis Gossett Jr. and Dennis Quaid. Jaws: The Revenge brought back Lorraine Gary as Ellen Brody, the wife of Scheider’s character, while Michael Caine was also featured in a role.

Jaws is now streaming on Netflix.
