A single-engine plane carrying three people crashed into a Western North Carolina field on Thursday, Sept. 18.
Aircraft tracking website FlightAware showed that a Cirrus SR22T plane had stopped in a field in Franklin, next to an airport, at 2:56 p.m. The plane is believed to have crashed. The Macon County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook reassuring the community that students and staff at Iotla School, which neighbors the site of the crash, were safe.
Three people were on board the plane when it crashed, officials confirmed. No one on board survived.

Authorities identified Melody Carole and Meryl Maxwell Wilson as the other two people in the plane on Sept. 19. They were confirmed deceased at the scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration listed the Cirrus SR22T as belonging to Brett Cornelius of Brentwood, Tennessee. Brett James, a 57-year-old country musician known for hit songs including “Jesus, Take The Wheel,” was born Brett James Cornelius, according to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Facebook page said that James had died in a post honoring the singer, who was a 2020 inductee, on Thursday night.

FlightAware data showed that the plane took off from John C. Tune Airport in Nashville earlier the same day and flew for just over an hour before making two loops near the Macon County Airport and crashing outside of the runway. The plane’s last recorded speed was 83 mph.
