Rihanna’s father, Ronald Fenty, has died in Los Angeles following a brief illness, multiple outlets confirmed. He was 70 years old.
Fenty’s death was first reported by Starcom Network News, an outlet based in Rihanna’s native country of Barbados.
Fenty reportedly died surrounded by his loved ones in the early hours of Saturday, the outlet said, citing sources close to his family. His official cause of death was not immediately known.
Rihanna’s brother, Rajad Fenty, was seen arriving at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Wednesday, according to a photo obtained by TMZ. The outlet said Rihanna may also have been in the car, but she was not spotted in any pictures.
The pop superstar and business mogul, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, had a rocky relationship with her father. In 2009, after she was assaulted by her then-boyfriend Chris Brown, Fenty allegedly spoke about the incident to the press without his daughter’s consent.
In 2019, Rihanna even filed a lawsuit against him, claiming he had misused her name to advance his own entertainment company. The case was dropped two years later after both parties reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement.
In 2023, Fenty told TMZ he was excited about the prospect of having a granddaughter, shortly after Rihanna’s show-stopping Super Bowl LVII halftime performance in which she revealed her second pregnancy.
Rihanna, who’s currently expecting her third child with partner A$AP Rocky, had yet to comment on the news as of Saturday afternoon.
