Tear us a river is the message that Britney Spears’s followers are trying to convey to Justin Timberlake.
Released on Thursday, January 25, Timberlake’s “Selfish” marked his return after a solo hiatus of more than five years. He is 42 years old. But Spears’s legion of devoted followers had other ideas. In 2023, Spears’s biography The Woman in Me, made charges about her rocky relationship with Timberlake. As a form of retaliation, her followers streamed her 2011 song “Selfish” instead of Timberlake’s new single. Spears is 42 years old.
It seems that the campaign got its start on X with the help of the @BritneyTheStan fan account for Britney Spears. Alleging that Spears will “release the new single, ‘Selfish,'” on Thursday, the message enthused all of Spears’ fans to begin streaming the song.
“Selfish” is a track from Femme Fatale, Spears’ 2011 deluxe edition album. On the same day that Timberlake’s return single was released, her song also hit the Top 40 on the U.S. iTunes list. Right now, “Selfish” by Timberlake and “Selfish” by Spears are both at the top of the charts.
Since Timberlake’s 2002 single “Cry Me a River” surfaced, accusing Spears of adultery in both the song’s lyrics and music video, Spears’ fans have been at odds with him. They were an item from 1999 till the beginning of 2002. The November 2022 single “Cry Me a River” has a woman who looked much like Britney Spears, although the song itself doesn’t include Spears.
“There was no way… to tell my side of the story” after the video’s release, Spears writes in The Woman in Me. She said that she was unable to provide an explanation because she was aware that once Justin had persuaded everyone of his version, she would have no allies. Justin probably had no idea how much power he had when he shamed me. I still don’t believe he gets it.
While dating Timberlake in the early 2000s, Spears allegedly had an abortion due to his reluctance to become a parent, as stated in the book. She remembered that he had told them they were “way too young” and “not ready” to start a family. Even though she “never would have done it” if she had the choice, she ended the pregnancy nevertheless.
This is the first song “Selfish” off Timberlake’s next album, Everything I Thought It Was. Friday, March 15th marks the release of the sequel to 2018’s Man of the Woods. Along with that, Timberlake announced his first world tour in five years, Forget Tomorrow. On Monday, April 29, the first leg of the North American dates will begin in Vancouver, Canada.
