According to an exclusive photo, there may yet be hope for the Peneloise friendship on “Bridgerton.”
Regarding its main couples, Bridgerton has had many highs and lows. However, the breakup of best friends Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Eloise (Claudia Jessie) has been the most difficult to accept.
When Eloise found out that Penelope had been Lady Whistledown all along and had been hiding the truth from her, Season 2 concluded with the friends at odds. Eloise questions Penelope about her treachery, and then she storms off, promising never to talk to her friend again. And in spite of Eloise’s rage, Penelope takes up her quill once more.
Thus, while Penelope’s third season promises a makeover and a relationship with her longstanding admirer, Luke Newton’s Colin Bridgerton, will it also bring her and her best friend back together? It appears from this picture (before the makeover) that the chances are favorable.
According to showrunner Jess Brownell, “I’m rooting for them,” EW can learn. “Bridgerton is about love—all kinds of love, including friendship. A sexual relationship can be just as devastating as a breakup between two friends. Penn finds it really challenging. However, it’s also an opportunity for the two of them to develop and discover more about themselves without the security of their best friend’s constant presence.”
And what about Penelope’s unwavering commitment to continuing her gossip column? Brownell continues, “It’s probably not Eloise’s favorite thing.” “It’s definitely a piece of the conflict between them — how that plays out, I will leave to be revealed.”
EW caught up with Brownell to ask her all of our burning questions about the eagerly anticipated third season, including getting the lowdown on the Polin romance, Pen’s makeover, and what’s in store for the other Bridgerton family members. This was just before it was revealed that Bridgerton will return in two parts in May and June.
Okay, fair enough, but we’ve had two seasons to truly come to know Pen and Colin. We’ve been observing Pen’s crush and Colin’s lack of awareness of it. You can only maintain that dynamic for so long until something has to give. It felt like the perfect opportunity to take advantage of what had been established up with them. As for Benedict, we can’t wait to play with him for a little while longer and give him more freedom before he settles down because he’s such a great character and a fan favorite.
