Doug Liman spoke on Edge Of Tomorrow 2 with Collider, discussing the film’s tumultuous process. Though Edge of Tomorrow was a box office success with a $370.5 million gross and has become an audience favorite, the sequel has yet to appear almost a decade after the first film. Despite this, Edge of Tomorrow 2 could still be genuinely possible if it can tackle a few logistical and narrative hurdles, giving me some hope for this franchise’s future.
Doug Liman’s Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Update Makes The Sequel Genuinely Possible
Liman Discussed The Two Factors Halting The Sequel
Liman’s discussion of the two main factors halting the sequel gives me hope that Edge of Tomorrow 2 could be saved. Liman, during a discussion on his film The Instigators, discussed the status of Edge of Tomorrow 2. He mentioned that the project was still a priority for him, though some parts were proving to be hard to crack. The time travel elements of the story were Liman’s biggest concern, as trying to create a proper third act was proving difficult due to the trope’s limitations.
Cruise also has a deal to develop original films and franchises with Warner Bros., the company that made Edge Of Tomorrow, making the possibility of a sequel even more likely.
Tom Cruise’s and Emily Blunt’s availability was another concern, as the two actors have been involved in several projects in recent years, making their appearances in the sequel questionable. These timing concerns, to me, could be easily fixed due to the two actors’ clear interest in Edge of Tomorrow 2, with both of them stating they would make time if a sequel was possible. Cruise also has a deal to develop original films and franchises with Warner Bros., the company that made Edge of Tomorrow, making the possibility of a sequel even more likely.
Why Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Still Needs To Happen
The Characters Arcs And Trope Possibilities Could Add To The Time Travel Genre
Both the somewhat reset character arcs and additional trope possibilities make me need Edge Of Tomorrow 2 to happen. In a market with so many multiverses and time travel storylines that end up becoming convoluted, the movie Edge of Tomorrow stood out to me. Its strict rules, limited focus, and sweeping consequences showcased the possibilities of the time travel trope both narratively and for character building. Edge of Tomorrow 2 could easily expand on the original’s themes of change and chance, especially as Cruise’s character tries to cope and makes Blunt’s character remember the events of the first film.
Speaking of Blunt’s character, her arc in the movie was essentially reset due to Cruise’s final battle in Edge of Tomorrow. The sequel could easily follow Blunt as she is accosted both by the current reality and what Cruise’s character tries to get her to remember. Not only would this create some great character drama and reestablish her arc regarding trust, but it might also create some anomalies the Mimics could use to strike again. Through this, Edge of Tomorrow 2 could blend romance, character, and action as easily as the first, showcasing how Time is never done with anyone.
