The Voice Coaches can always tell when someone special steps onstage.
Everyone who makes it to The Voice stage for the Blind Auditions is packing some kind of talent. It’s one of the things that makes the Blinds so fun to watch, because you just never know exactly what kind of vocal performance you’re about to get, but you know it’ll be interesting. The Coaches know this too, which means that when they’re especially blown away by a performer, the audience knows something special is happening.
In Episode 3 of Season 25 tonight, 31-year-old Asher HaVon provided that something special. A singer from Selma, Alabama, HaVon’s big break came when he was able to perform in front of President Barack Obama during one of his hometown’s Civil Rights commemorations. But even with such a high-profile gig under his belt, HaVon still spent most of his time since performing for his church, unaware that he’d one day get the chance to leave Alabama and head to The Voice stage.
“To be here is the grandest thing I have ever experienced in my life,” he said backstage. Then, he went out and made the moment count.

For his Blind Audition, HaVon chose a showstopping song, Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain,” and right away started to win fans. Chance the Rapper turned his chair in seconds, followed closely by Dan + Shay, and then Reba McEntire, who was first to respond when the audition was over.
“Asher, what an incredible voice you have,” she said. “Your range, your power, I couldn’t wait to turn around and see what you look like.”
Though Coach John Legend didn’t turn his chair for HaVon, he did have plenty of praise for the vocalist, echoing many of McEntire’s points.
“What a powerful voice, what a powerful range you have,” Legend said. “I was so intrigued. It went in so many different places and your voice has so many different pockets that are very cool. I’m excited to see your journey on the show.”
After Dan + Shay offered equally effusive praise for HaVon, it was Chance’s turn; it was clear immediately that the rapper was lobbying hard to get HaVon on his team.
“I instantly turned around because I can tell you’re trying to win this competition, and you should,” he said. “Everything that you did was phenomenal, like it was next level. I was blown away by it, that’s why I immediately turned around.”
When it was time for HaVon to finally pick his Coach, it was clear that his family had already attempted to choose for him, repeatedly chanting Chance the Rapper’s name as he pondered his options. But for HaVon, the choice was already clear… and it wasn’t Chance.
“Chance, I really love you…but I gotta choose Reba,” he said.
