Elon Musk‘s tweet—or rather, X post—which has quickly gone viral, reads:
We need a video gamer voting block!
Make Games Great Again!!
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 17, 2024
The call to “Make Games Great Again” has struck a chord with many gamers who feel that the industry has lost its way in recent years.
Some have pointed to the increasing focus on representation and diversity in games, arguing that it has come at the expense of gameplay and innovation.
Video games are so woke anymore. I’ve gained my entire life, since I was six years old, and every time I pick up a new game now, I’m just WAITING for it to SUCK with wokeness.

The sentiment isn’t limited to gaming either. Many fans feel that this trend has affected other forms of entertainment as well, leading to a sense of fatigue and frustration.
Yup. TV is nigh on dead to me because it’s next to impossible for me to find a show that isn’t DEI-laden crap. Add to that I won’t watch shows with certain actors and/or directors.

I have no idea what this means but I agree

Of course, not everyone is on board with Musk’s message. Some have expressed confusion over what exactly he means by “Make Games Great Again,” while others have dismissed it as just another attention-grabbing stunt.
The Balance of Representation and Gameplay

The debate over representation in video games is a complex one, with valid arguments on both sides. While it’s important for games to be inclusive and diverse, some argue that this shouldn’t come at the expense of gameplay and innovation.
The most recent example of this is the Sony-backed hero shooter Concord, which was criticized for its heavy-handed approach to representation, subpar character design, and lack of any gameplay innovation. Despite a reported $400 million budget, the game was a record-breaking commercial flop—with many players citing its focus on pronouns, LGBTQIA+ characters, and body positivity as a turnoff.
On the other hand, games like Black Myth: Wukong, which prioritized gameplay and storytelling over pushing a particular agenda, have been met with widespread acclaim and huge commercial success. Wukong reportedly had a fraction of Concord’s budget, yet it has already emerged as a strong contender for Game of the Year.
The key, it seems, is finding a balance between representation and gameplay. Games that manage to do both, like the critically acclaimed The Last of Us Part II, have shown that it’s possible to tell diverse, inclusive stories without sacrificing what makes games great in the first place.

As for Musk’s plea to “Make Games Great Again,” only time will tell what he has in store. Some have speculated that he may be planning to enter the gaming industry himself, while others believe he’s simply trying to stir up controversy and generate buzz.
Whatever the case may be, one thing is clear: the gaming community is eager for change, and Musk’s tweet has only added fuel to the fire. Will he be the one to lead the charge, or will his words ultimately prove to be nothing more than empty promises? Only time will tell.
