Agatha All Along has teased numerous mysteries, offering explanations for only a few thus far. While we’ve identified the enigmatic teen, this revelation has led to new questions that likely won’t be resolved until the final episode.

One intriguing mystery introduced in the second episode has sparked fan debates ever since: the enigmatic black heart on Agatha’s list of potential recruits for her coven.

As you may remember, Lilia Calderu provided Agatha with a list of her coven members, but one name was mysteriously replaced by a black heart. Agatha initially thought the black heart represented Mrs. Hart, the Green Witch, but Lilia couldn’t make it green because she only had a black pen.

Some fans speculated that the black heart referred to Rio Vidal, Agatha’s former lover, and Mephisto’s gender-bent “son,” Blackheart, a well-known demon from Marvel comics.

However, after Episode 6, it turns out we were mistaken. Jac Schaeffer recently spoke with The Wrap about the show and addressed this specific detail.

In a flashback scene from Episode 6, Eddie, Billy’s boyfriend, refers to him as his “black heart,” and Schaeffer confirmed that the black heart on the list indeed references the Teen—Billy Kaplan, a.k.a. Billy Maximoff.

While we talk of Rio, there is a text that Billy gets from his boyfriend that says, “You are my heart.” It is a black heart. So is this coming down to interpretation again, or can you give an answer here? Because everyone assumed, I assumed, that Rio was the black heart, because she says, “My heart is black and it beats for you.” So who is the black heart? Can you say?

Yeah, Billy’s the black heart.

The showrunner was then asked how this fits into the coven’s numbers. If the Teen was always intended to be part of the coven, that means there’s now one “extra” member, initially represented by Mrs. Hart and now by Rio Vidal.

But this means now the math is not mathing. Because according to Lilia’s list, the coven was supposed to be Agatha, Lilia, Jen, Alice, and then Billy. Do we have an extra on the road with Rio?

First, I would say, you know, please see future episodes. And when I say it at this point Andi, when I’m saying “please see future episodes,” it’s no longer about — to me, and the way that I consume content — it is now less about the sort of concrete answers of things, and more about, as we move forward, there will be more information and more fleshing out, both in terms of character and just a richness that will enhance interpretation, if that makes sense.

But your point about how the math is not mathing, witchcraft is not mathematical. Witchcraft is so much about intention. It is so elusive. And I’ve been so delighted at how seriously fans are taking the rules, and the trials. And I would say to that, bravo and thank you. And also, witchcraft is murky, and witchcraft is imprecise.

But are we still right to assume that Blackheart is somewhere in the MCU? Is the Teen connected to Mephisto? In the comics, he is, but what about in the MCU? In a separate interview, Schaeffer mentioned that more about Billy’s past will be revealed in relation to Mephisto as the show progresses.

Um, there is just more to be revealed, is what I would say. I would just say that we are over halfway into this narrative, our players are on the board, and we have a lot of meat still left on the bone.
