Throughout The Rings of Power Season 2, Celebrimbor is slowly manipulated and tortured by a disguised Sauron to forge the titular Rings of Power. The gifted elven-smith does indeed make them, but eventually uncovers the twisted reason for their creation during the siege of Eregion. In one last act of defiance, he confronts his former friend Sauron (who names himself Annatar, the Lord of Gifts), revealing one last vision of the Dark Lord’s defeat as a result of the rings’ existence. Celebrimbor actor Charles Edwards spoke with Vulture about The Rings of Power finale, explaining his point of view on the prophecy shared by his character to Sauron.
“I was thinking it was similar to the vision Galadriel has of Celebrimbor at the beginning of season two. It’s a flash. There could be an idea of enslavement with the rings as well. Now that he’s gotten far enough with the process, he understands that Sauron’s going to need control to make these rings work. Maybe he’s pieced that together as well. But I saw it as a kind of flash, a vision in my head, and he just says it.”
Edwards aptly compares his character’s final words to the brief vision Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) has at the beginning of Season 2, in which he is overtaken by darkness and left dead on a tree. However, his final scene ends up being far more hopeful than Galadriel had imagined, since Celebrimbor accurately predicts the conclusion The Rings of Power is quickly heading towards.
The Rings of Power’s Endgame is Now Clear
The Rings of Power Season 2 finale is great in its own right, but it does a lot to set up for an earth-shattering future that is rapidly approaching. As seen in the opening of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings, Amazon’s streaming series will cover the War of the Last Alliance, the major battle that featured Sauron’s defeat and brought about the ending of the Second Age. Since the Nine Rings of Men have been created, the only step left for Sauron is to create the One Ring. Celebrimbor’s final words tease how Sauron’s obsession with the magical jewelry will lead to his own demise, a precursor to the Dark Lord getting his own finger cut off by Isildur at the end of the War of the Last Alliance and losing the One Ring.
Of course, if a third season of The Rings of Power is confirmed, the final war will not be seen until the already-planned fifth season. Until then, expect to see Sauron, who will now be the main villain after Adar’s death, continue to spread his influence across Middle-earth and set the apocalyptic-level event into motion. Celebrimbor will not be returning, sadly, but his prophecy will now lead audiences into the most epic parts of the story, which unveils the never-before-seen history of the Second Age.
