Marvel Studios recently shared a teaser trailer and announced the release dates for the upcoming MCU shows set for 2024 and 2025. Fans can expect to be entertained with both live-action and animated series featuring many familiar characters.
One of these new shows is ‘Marvel Zombies,’ an animated miniseries coming to Disney+. Created by Zeb Wells, it is based on the Marvel Comics series and is part of the MCU. The story takes place in a different timeline from the ‘What If…?’ episode called ‘What If… Zombies?!’ (2021), where a group of survivors must fight against former heroes and villains who have become zombies.
The show is expected to come out in October 2025, nearly a year after the end of ‘What If…?’ Season 3, which is set to release in December this year.
We don’t know much about the story yet, except for what we saw in the teasers. The showrunners, Andrews and Winderbaum, shared a scene where Shang-Chi and Katy, the last survivors in San Francisco, are rescued by agents from the Ten Rings. When Shang-Chi gets bitten by zombies, Wenwu sacrifices himself to stop the infection from spreading.
Five years later, Shang-Chi is leading a group through the desert, like in “The Road Warrior.” Their journey is interrupted by Skrulls trying to steal their cattle, and Shang-Chi and his team, which may include Jimmy Woo, are ready to fight.
This hints that Shang-Chi will be one of the main characters in the show, along with Kamala Khan, who was mentioned earlier.
The series will also show alternate versions of several MCU characters, including Yelena Belova, Katy, Kate Bishop, Red Guardian, Jimmy Woo, Death Dealer, Shang-Chi, Blade, and Xu Wenwu.
The zombies in the series will include Hawkeye, Steve Rogers, Abomination, Ghost, Scarlet Witch, Captain Marvel, Ikaris, and Okoye.
Ikaris’ inclusion is particularly interesting because this will be the first time the character appears since ‘Eternals.’ This might mean that something is planned for him in the future.
Last year, there were rumors about a sequel to ‘Eternals’ being made and that Richard Madden would return to play his role again. However, after ‘The Marvels’ did poorly at the box office, Marvel Studios reportedly put several projects on hold, including ‘Captain Marvel 3’ and ‘Eternals 2.’
Since ‘Marvel Zombies’ has been in development for a while, it’s unlikely that this will be the only project where Ikaris comes back. But it could be a hint that he will show up in future projects.
