Alan Ritchson has seen his career soar since taking on the role of tough guy Jack Reacher, but his next project will be very different to his return in Reacher Season 3 – a movie with almost nothing to say, literally. Motor City is described as a “visually driven, near-silent revenge tale.” To hammer this home, Ben Foster , who co-stars with Ritchson in the movie, has revealed the film contains just five lines of dialogue.
Everyone has seen that Ritchson can handle himself on-screen, using a lot of muscle to take down bad guys in his hit Prime Video series, or delivering a more dramatic turn in the movie Ordinary Angels. This time around though, Foster revealed in an interview with Collider that both he and Ritchson are being challenged a little differently, with a movie that relies on what you see and not what is being said. During an appearance at the TIFF, Foster said of his huge co-star:
He’s very tall, very muscular, and very handsome. He’s terrific as a mover. I think he wants to do some deeper or different kinds of work than he’s been doing, and that’s a joy.
Motor City Will Be a Unique Cinematic Experience
It is several years now since A Quiet Place delivered an unusual experience for theater-goers, with a horror movie that for much of its runtime was almost silent. It seems that Motor City will be bringing a similar kind of one-off viewing experience to cinemas, but this time will have a thumping soundtrack to go with it.
As an action movie, the idea of Motor City being silent would be a step too far, but thanks to the involvement of Detriot-born musician Jack White, the film will have what is described as a “rock-disco” soundtrack to help tell its story.
“The film itself, Motor City — we just wrapped — is virtually a silent film . There are five lines of dialogue. Jack White is helping with the music, so it’s like a rock disco revenge film. It’s like a graphic novel, so it’ll be interesting to see how that shakes out.”
Director Potsy Ponciroli, who previously delivered the 2021 Western action movie Old Henry, has already proven his abilities to produce a dynamic and stylized movie, and Motor City looks set to push the boundaries even further. Jon Berg, president of production at Stampede Ventures, called the film “somewhere between an opera, a music video, and an action movie.” He added that the removal of almost all the dialogue from the film is a way of showcasing the abilities of Foster, Ritchson, and the rest of the cast.
[It is all] dynamic camera work, brilliant music, muscle cars, and an immersive sound design surrounding badass action sequences.
While Ritchson has more than proven himself when it comes to tough guy roles, Motor City is going to be a very different experience to his return as Jack Reacher next year. For fans who have enjoyed watching him grow over the last few years, there is going to be plenty to feast their eyes on here – just don’t go in expecting him to have much to say.
