Game Science’s Feng Ji, the visionary behind the Black Myth: Wukong, was always optimistic and wanted to build a single-player AAA experience free from all the microtransactions and endless in-app purchases. So when in 2016, Steam highlighted that 1/3rd of its active users were from China, this information reignited Feng Ji’s passion for creating his own high-quality AAA game.

Recognizing that the Chinese market was also craving a high-quality game, he started his journey to create a game that not only showcased the studio’s talents to the world but also highlighted the intricate and diverse culture of China.

This bold decision started Game Science‘s difficult yet adventurous journey into AAA game development. However, the path to success was filled with challenges. As the team slowly expanded from seven to thirty members, the main struggle was to find the right talent to adapt to new technologies like the Unreal Engine.

However, on the brink of failure in 2020, they released a 13-minute gameplay trailer that went viral, starting the turning point of the studio. What was simply meant to be a recruitment video became an overnight sensation, turning the whole project around. It caught the attention of millions of viewers on YouTube and Bilibili.

Instantly, the studio was receiving numerous job applications from talented individuals who also wanted to work on such an amazing project. This demand led to an increase in the team from 30 to 140 members. After this recruitment process, the team spent 4 more years in development, working tirelessly to fix every little detail. On August 20th, 2024, the game shocked the world with its release.

The global success of Black Myth: Wukong highlights the growing demand for high-quality single-player gaming experiences that don’t have endless in-app purchases to keep the gamer interested. The game’s success showed that the global market was not only ready but eager for such experiences, shattering various records.

What makes the success of the game even more compelling and inspiring is the unwavering trust Feng Ji and his team had in their vision, highlighting that even a small studio can find success despite initial struggles and limited resources. However, it is also worth noting that their rise was a combination of passion, strategic decisions, and a bit of good luck.

As video games continue to captivate gamers around the globe, Black Myth: Wukong will serve as an inspiring example for other developers and studios of what can be achieved with the right mix of talent, vision, and resilience. In the end, as players are enjoying the game, Feng Ji is already preparing to work on the game’s expansions.
