Path of Exile 2 Punishing Players for Experimenting With Builds Is Unhealthy in the Long Run

Respec costs in Path of Exile 2 is too high that fans will think twice before experimenting with skill tree to achieve additional skills.

Early access to Path of Exile 2 saw an incredible all-time player peak of nearly 600,000 on its early access launch weekend, giving the game the best start possible earlier this month. It’s safe to say that even though the launch was difficult, it was a huge success because so many players were waiting to get in that it even reportedly broke SteamDB.

Fans of Path of Exile are now able to play the sequel, slogging it out for gold and loot and having a great time overall. However, there are certain aspects of the game that need improvement, as grievances have begun to surface regarding respec costs and loot drops, the latter of which is currently a major issue in the community.

According to user Schokkushen’s widely shared post on the r/pathofexile subreddit, respec costs are “way too high” at the moment, penalizing players for experimenting with particular skills.

It doesn’t sound too bad in and of itself, but in order to respec a skill, you have to go to the Hooded One and pay a little bit of gold to get one skill point back.

A small amount of gold quickly adds up to tens of thousands if you have a more drastic respec in mind, as the amount of gold required to respec is not affected by the number of skills you have unlocked.

Like-minded fans can be found in the replies to Schokkushen’s thread. For example, many fans expressed their annoyance at having to grind for an hour in order to fund their respect.

Additionally, they claimed that it is extremely punishing for novices like themselves, who might find the skill trees too extensive or perplexing to understand how each skill functions in tandem without consulting a guide.

Although it appears that many people in the thread are skeptical, it is important to note that Path of Exile 2 is still in early access, so there is still plenty of time for Grinding Gear Games to genuinely take fan feedback into consideration and reduce the price. Despite all of these, Path of Exile 2 is looking to end the dominance of Diablo 4.

How to respec skill points in Path of Exile 2

Just speak with the Hooded One and choose the Refund Passives option to restore your skill points. The passive skill tree will appear on the screen after this. You can see how much gold is needed to successfully respec an unlocked passive by hovering over it.

The ‘end’ of branches is the only place where skill points can be unallocated. You will not be able to unallocate a skill if you hover over one that has an outwardly attached skill that has already been unlocked.

You can move the point to a different location on the tree after it has been unallocated. You can take your time considering your possible build, though, as you are not required to use the points right away.

In light of this, respeccing an entire branch of nodes can be highly costly. Fortunately, there are several ways to get gold, so all you have to do is farm (and sell) to earn enough to respec the desired passive points.

In response to complaints regarding loot drops, the studio made a change to the game to make it more generous. Perhaps if we persist in our efforts, they will eventually give in.
