Rory Kinnear on Tom Bombadil in 'The Rings of Power': "They are using him in a different way to how Tolkien did."

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power became a huge hit series on Amazon in spite of a lot of hate and criticism. The show is getting a second season, as we have previously reported in a number of our articles and the eight new episodes of that season will debut on August 29, 2024, which is only a couple of days away. It will be intriguing to see how everything turns out, particularly in light of the recent significant revelations from the showrunners.

In the last couple of months, we have reported on several stories related to the series’ characters and the changes that are going to be made. Some new characters will appear, while others will be getting more screen time and will evolve in a different way.

Tom Bombadil is one of the characters set to make an impact in Season 2, and one of Tolkien’s most intriguing characters will be played by the legendary Rory Kinnear, who revealed more details about his role.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Rory Kinnear discussed Tom Bombadil and why it’s taken so long for the filmmakers to bring this legendary character to the big screen, explaining how different approaches demand different characters:

“Well, I guess with the other adaptations, I think Peter Jackson said it, it doesn’t necessarily drive the story on, particularly in the narrative of it. But in the pages and in people’s imaginations, he is this incredible character that has so much knowledge and so much sense of fun and so much life about him, as well as the whole of humanity and history and the earth. This is sort of representative of all that Earth is, and Middle-earth.”

He also added that the series will have a different approach to the character than Tolkien fans are used to:

“Obviously over multi-season episodic TV, you’ve got more time to investigate those stories. In the way that [showrunners] J.D. [Payne] and Patrick [McKay] are telling the story, they’re able to create a role for him that isn’t necessarily the one that he has in the books. So whilst they’re using that character, they are using him in a different way to how Tolkien did.”

This might anger some fans, but there is no reason to believe it will be executed poorly, especially with such a big acting name behind the role. Are you looking forward to Tom Bombadil’s appearance? Let us know in the comments below!
