The Conjuring star Joey King hasn’t watched the rest of the franchise because it’s “too scary.” King played one of Roger and Carolyn Perron’s five daughters, Christine, in TheConjuring which, released in 2013, was a critical and commercial success that kickstarted an ongoing horror franchise. The series currently consists of two sequels focused on paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, with The Conjuring 4 on the way. The franchise also includes two spin-off/prequel series, Annabelle and The Nun, telling origin stories for their titular entities.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant promoting We Were The Lucky Ones, King admitted that, after starring in the first film, she hasn’t watched the rest of The Conjuring franchise because it’s “too scary.” The actor says there are still nights when she sees the witch Bathsheba Sherman’s face, though she refuses to say her name during the interview. Check out King’s full comments below:
Yeah. Oh my gosh, the first Conjuring, I was in it. I was there for the whole thing. It is so difficult for me to watch. It is so scary. It’s not difficult in any other way but that it is so scary. I have such an issue. But I’m so proud of everybody. I was just so proud of everybody involved, because I think that being part of that was amazing. But yeah, it is too scary for me. [Laughs]
Yeah, it is amazing, it is so scary! [Chuckles] There’s nights where I still see the witch’s face. I won’t even say her name, because it scares me so. I can barely talk about The Conjuring 1, because I am afraid of things hearing me. But I’m glad everyone likes it! [Laughs]
Joey King’s Horror Roles After The Conjuring
King’s Fear Of The Conjuring Hasn’t Kept Her Away From Horror

Given the anthological nature of The Conjuring movies, King hasn’t returned as Christine for any of the sequels or spinoffs, though she has returned to the horror genre from time to time. Before The Conjuring, King actually had a small role in the 2008 found footage horror film, Quarantine. However, it wasn’t until 2017 that King returned to the genre with a lead role in the supernatural horror film, Wish Upon. King was director John R. Leonetti’s first choice for the lead role since the two previously worked together on The Conjuring, with Leonetti serving as cinematographer.
After Wish Upon, King would go on to star in The Lie the following year in 2018, a psychological horror film produced by Blumhouse. In her most famous horror film after The Conjuring, King starred in Slender Man the same year, which was infamously panned by critics and audiences, but still managed to be a modest box office success. While King has returned to the horror genre from time to time over the years, none of these titles have been able to achieve the critical or commercial success of The Conjuring.
