Godzilla Minus One’s VFX blew every Hollywood big gun out of the water, and the surprises just keep on coming.

Godzilla Minus One was a visual feast, and what shocked fans was that the film was able to rival other CGI fests with its meager budget. The film took the franchise back to the drawing board, bringing it back to the World War 2 era.

The CGI of the film received an Academy Award, something that took the industry by storm. The creatives behind the film talked about their VFX process and revealed how the story of the film played with the VFX capabilities of the production team.

The CGI team owed a lot to a young compositor in the company

The creative team talked about how their narrative was able to include more CGI shots because of one young compositor in the company. Speaking to A Frame, they said:

We had a very young compositor — that was his role inside the company — but it turned out he loved VFX. He did some water simulations at home and brought them to the office one day. We said, ‘Oh wow, this is some pretty high-quality water simulation!’ That allowed me to write in more scenes that took place on the ocean.

The CGI team of the film deserved its accolades, given the minuscule budget that the film had. The shots of the film, which rivaled that of bigger productions, ended up winning the Academy Award despite the meager amount of resources that were put on screen.

Godzilla Minus One could receive a sequel

Thanks to the film’s commercial and critical success, there have been a lot of talks about how the film could receive a sequel. While some are more serious, such as Takashi Yamazaki‘s pitch inspired by Princess Mononoke, others have been more light-hearted. All in all, a sequel to the film can explore the themes that have been set up in the first film, such as the issues that Japan dealt with in the wake of the Second World War.

There is also a keen interest in seeing Godzilla battle other antagonistic Kaiju, as has become the norm with most Godzilla series. However, given that the Monsterverse also functions on that gimmick, this version of a possible sequel might not gain the same kind of traction that the first film in the franchise did.
