HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys has addressed True Detective season 5’s potential connections to Night Country, explaining what he knows about the forthcoming episodes. Following the anthology series’ successful revitalization with new show runner Issa López, it was announced that True Detective season 5 would see the creative behind season 4 come back as showrunner. While not much is known about whether the forthcoming episodes will directly connect to the previous storyline, the critical acclaim of her first season has led to speculation about how said connections could form.

Speaking with Deadline about True Detective season 5, Bloys said he didn’t know if showrunner Issa López was planning on bringing back characters from Ennis, Alaska, saying she was still writing the upcoming season. However, he didn’t rule out the possibility of familiar faces returning, even if there’s currently no confirmation that a direct connection is going to arise. Check out what Bloys had to say below:

López’s first season of the anthology mystery series held tangential connections to True Detective season 1, featuring an appearance from Rust Cohle’s father, Travis (Erling Eliasson), alongside similar spiral imagery in the case being investigated. While Night Country told its own story that wasn’t directly connected to the Nic Pizzolatto original, the symbolic connections hinted at López potentially tying the anthology series together. However, there’s no word on whether season 5 will do something similar, potentially cementing itself within the same universe as season 4 with its new case and investigators.

The end of Night Country also wrapped up the story definitively, leaving some questions unanswered but delivering a satisfying conclusion to its characters. However, with Jodie Foster having won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, it wouldn’t be surprising for her Chief Liz Danvers to make a return at some point. Given her Emmy is the first time an actor on the series won at the awards ceremony, she’s staked her claim as an important part of the anthology series’ history – making bringing her back within the realm of possibility.

Since Bloys isn’t completely sure if True Detective season 5 will connect to Night Country, the possibility the two seasons have some common ground is still there. However, with López previously teasing a “very different” story for the upcoming episodes, the show could instead follow the formula of Pizzolatto’s seasons and create something entirely new. Although it’s unclear if Foster’s Emmy win will influence what the showrunner does, it could open the door for more direct connections than were previously planned.
