Liam Payne‘s family is ready to take legal action against anyone who may have contributed to his death back in October.

That’s the new report coming from an unnamed source after lawyers representing the late One Direction star’s family showed up in a Buenos Aires courtroom on Tuesday. According to Page Six citing both that source and legal documentation, longtime music industry lawyer Richard Bray — acting on behalf of the family — handed over the case’s interests to a team of local lawyers in Argentina. Per that outlet, this move means that Payne’s loved ones could be named as plaintiffs and be defended by that local law firm in any criminal or civil case going forward.

A source who purportedly knows the family told the news outlet they are “100% sure” Liam’s parents Geoff and Karen Payne would seek justice for the late star, who passed away last month at just 31.

Prosecutors have already charged two staffers from the CasaSur Palermo Hotel with allegedly providing drugs to the boy band musician. And of late, there is also the question of whether hotel staffers are culpable for forcibly dragging Payne to his hotel room and shutting him in it not long before he fell from the balcony to his death.

Regarding the possibility of future charges, Buenos Aires-based criminal lawyer Nicolás Durrieu told Page Six that hotel staffers could face charges of “abandonment of a person” with an “aggravated” enhancement considering the person in question (Payne) perished. Durrieu said:

“The legal system also allows the family to bring their own private criminal prosecution and their own investigation. Victims are very empowered and independent from the prosecutor. Usually the family joins with the prosecutor, but not always.”

Guilt on those potential charges could result in as long as 15 years in prison, per Durrieu. Other charges potentially on the table include manslaughter (up to five years in prison) and/or drug facilitation or distribution (up to 12 years imprisonment). Wow.
