Silent Hill 2 Remake’s director really wanted to adapt Lord of the Rings into a survival horror game, but he realizes that it is not an easy task.

Silent Hill 2 Remake’s director, Mateusz Lenart, had envisioned a horror fantasy game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece work The Lord of the Rings; however, due to some practical and thematic reasons, that project will likely never see the light of day.

Mateusz Lenart, the mind behind Silent Hill 2 Remake, is a big fan of the fantasy horror genre; he likes to blend fantastical and adventure elements with the survival horror genre.

During an interview with Bonfire Conversations, Mateusz Lenart talked about how he envisioned the Silent Hill 2 Remake, along with his future ambitions with the survival horror genre. Lenart managed to leave a mark due to the differences between his remake and the original version.
He is a big fan of fantasy and would have loved to adapt Lord of the Rings into a horror game; however, it is very difficult to build a horror game on it due to its recurring theme of good vs. evil. Lord of the Rings is just too black and white for it to be adapted into a horror game.
Lenart feels that it would have been very difficult to work around a theme that is so linear and transparent; there is no scope to create complex characters and scenarios since, at the end of the day, everything eventually boils down to what is good and what is evil. When asked about the adaptation, he said:
Don’t think I didn’t pitch. Like obsiously, you know like the world that was created by Tolkien is very like black and white in many many ways, so creating like the psychological horror in this in this world might be a challenge for us that’s why it’s not super easy at the same time, in general creating horror in the fantasy uh world is another layer of of challenge.
It will not be easy to make a horror game inspired by Tolkien’s world since there are a lot of layers of challenges that need to be tackled, and there is no hope that Lenart is ready to take on that challenge at the moment. After Silent Hill 2 Remake’s success, he might want to focus on making the sequels even better.
Lenart thinks it is possible but very difficult to adapt Lord of the Rings

Adapting Lord of the Rings is not an impossible task; it can very well be done, but it will require an immense amount of research and time to be worth it. Lenart is very well aware of the challenges, which is why he is currently not interested in going ahead with this dream of his.
Lenart also believes that creating any fantasy horror game is quite challenging, so adapting an already established world would make things more difficult.
Maybe in the near future we might see it get adapted in some other genre, but it seems like a fantasy horror by Lenart is out of the picture. Do you want to see a fantasy horror based on The Lord of the Rings? Let us know in the comments below.
