Michelle Buteau will be back as New York stylist Mavis Beaumont for a third and final season of Survival of the Thickest, and we just got a major production update following its official renewal earlier this summer. Here’s what we know.
While Season 1 featured in the Netflix weekly top 10 charts globally for three weeks, picking up 35 million viewing hours, equivalent to 9.7 million views, the same didn’t happen for Season 2. According to the Netflix Engagement Report, covering all viewing from January to June 2025, season 2 ranked as the 297th most popular series for the period, garnering 22.4 million hours watched, equivalent to 6.4 million views. Season 1 saw a boost in viewership upon the arrival of Season 2.
Although viewership appeared to have dropped significantly between seasons 1 and 2, it wasn’t enough for Netflix to cut ties with the show. The streamer confirmed, as part of its Upfront presentation in May 2025, that the show would be returning for a third and final season.
Alongside the renewal, Michelle Buteau appeared in a special video skit (embedded below) where she got confirmation of the renewal over the phone. In an additional statement to Netflix, Buteau teased from season 3’s future, “Honestly, I want to know what’s good for Mavis! Mavis has really put herself out there, and if she continues to do so, the sky’s the limit.”
Ahead of the renewal, speaking to Gold Derby, Buteau predicted the future for her character, saying, “She probably got a kin. She’s probably a designer. She’s built a lovely community. She’s making sure that trans and nonbinary people feel amazing and safe. She’s making sure that every fatty-batty has a belt that will fit. Yeah, she’s a community organizer. She’s doing her thing.” Will all this come true? We’ll have to wait and see.

In a press release alongside the announcement of season 3, Netflix said, “The series represents authentic Black & LGBTQ+ voices that cover important conversations with heart and hilarity,” in addition to adding that, “Michelle and her creative team have set the bar for inclusivity in front of and behind the camera with Season 2.” They note that women of color directed all episodes of season 2.
The series is produced by A24 Television, which is also behind Netflix’s Mo and Beef, with the latter set to return to Netflix in Spring 2026 with season 2.

As mentioned above, filming is set to begin on the final season in November in New York City, which has been the show’s home since Season 1. According to the latest listings, cameras are set to begin rolling on November 24th, 2025, and will run for 72 days (approximately 10 weeks), with a scheduled wrap on February 3rd, 2026.
What does that mean for a release date? Well, it makes a 2026 return highly likely, with a summer/Fall return almost certainly now on the cards.
