Elgin James will pen the series set in the same world as the five-season hit drama.
Prison Break has been sentenced to the reboot treatment.
EW can confirm that Hulu is developing a new series based on the beloved Fox drama. (Deadline was first to report the news.) The reboot, which comes from Mayans M.C. co-creator and showrunner Elgin James, will not follow the characters of the original saga but is set in the same world. James is penning the show and will executive produce alongside Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring, Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz.
Prison Break originally ran for four seasons on Fox from 2005 to 2009. It starred Dominic Purcell as a man sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit and Wentworth Miller as his brother, who hatches a plan to break him out of prison. A ratings juggernaut, the series picked up a Golden Globe for best television series drama in its debut season.
The stars returned for a revived fifth season in 2017, and Fox was in development for another installment before revealing in 2019 that those plans were scrapped. The series also spawned a TV movie, The Final Break, and a short-lived mobisode spinoff, Prison Break: Proof of Innocence, which was exclusively available on mobile phones.
In a now-deleted Instagram post, Miller — who is an out gay man — expressed his disinterest in returning to the role of Michael Scofield. “I’m out. Of PB. Officially,” the actor wrote. “Not [because] of static on social media (although that has centered the issue). I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told).”
He continued, “No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry.”
Responding to the post, his onscreen brother Purcell voiced his support: “Glad you have made this decision for your health and your truth.”
