Austin Police Identify 2 Victims Killed Shooting in Mass Shooting Outside Bar

Austin police identified a man and a woman as two victims killed in a mass shooting that occurred on Sunday, March 1.

Ryder Harrington, 19, and Savitha Shan, 21, were identified by the Austin Police Department in a press release.

14 others were injured in the shooting, which occurred at Buford’s, a bar on West 6th Street in Austin. NBC News reported that one of the injured victims was being taken off life support Monday, March 2.

Harrington’s brother, Reed Harrington, posted on Facebook about his brother’s death.

“It is unfair, to say the least, that my little brother was only given 19 years on this earth,” Reed posted. “Watching the man he had become, and seeing all the lives he touched, leaves me certain that this world was robbed of a great future.”

According to the Texas Tech University chapter of Beta Theta Pi, Harrington was a member of the Fall 2024 pledge class.

“Ryder was a beloved son, brother, and friend whose kindness and presence touched countless lives,” one of his fraternity brothers wrote in a GoFundMe. “From the moment he joined our brotherhood, he brought a light that was impossible to ignore. Ryder had a rare ability to truly enjoy life to make people laugh, to make moments feel bigger, and to make ordinary days unforgettable.”

The GoFundMe has currently raised over $70,000.

KUT reported that Shan was a student at the University of Texas at Austin.

“Today, it was confirmed that among those who lost their lives is one UT student,” university president Jim Davis said in an email to students, per KUT. “A child of loving parents. A loyal friend to many. A Longhorn preparing to change the world. It is devastating, and I know all of us are grieved by this horrible news and we will remember her.”

Authorities previously identified the gunman as Ndiaga Diagne, 53, who was killed by police responding to the shooting. CNN, the Associated Press and CBS News reported, citing law enforcement sources, that Diagne was wearing a sweatshirt that said “Property of Allah” over a shirt that had the Iranian flag on it. Federal authorities are now investigating whether the attack is connected to terrorism.
