**Lewes train derailment causes major rush-hour disruption across Sussex network**
A passenger train derailment near Lewes in East Sussex on the afternoon of 13 August 2026 has triggered widespread travel chaos, with major disruption expected to last until at least 10pm.
The incident occurred at approximately 3.54pm between Haywards Heath and Lewes. All lines through Lewes station were closed to allow emergency services to respond. Southern Railway and National Rail warned passengers of major disruption across the Sussex coastal network during peak hours.
No trains are running between Haywards Heath and Lewes. Most services between Brighton and Lewes have been cancelled. There is no service between Seaford or Eastbourne and Lewes. Cooksbridge and Plumpton stations are not being served until further notice. Wider disruption is affecting routes linking Brighton, Eastbourne, Seaford, Ore and London Victoria.
Passengers travelling to or from Gatwick Airport have been advised to allow an extra 90 minutes for their journeys. Those already travelling or who must travel should allow at least an additional 60 minutes.
Southern Railway has strongly advised people to delay non-essential journeys in the affected area until later in the day or to use alternative routes. National Rail confirmed that tickets will be accepted at no extra cost on certain alternative services. These include Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express services between Brighton and London Victoria, the London Underground between all London terminals, and selected Brighton & Hove bus routes (28, 29, 29B and 29X).
Passengers already on trains that have been brought to a standstill have been told to remain on board and follow instructions from staff.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said she was deeply concerned by the reports and thanked emergency services working at the scene. British Transport Police, Sussex Police, paramedics and the fire service attended the site.
The derailment closed a key junction on the Sussex network during the evening rush hour, leaving many commuters facing cancelled trains, long delays or the need to find alternative transport.
