Adam Brody Reveals Heavy Preparation For His Role as a Hip Rabbi
Fans will remember Adam Brody in his breakout role as Seth Cohen in the hit Fox series The O.C. and his latest stint in DC’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods. This time, he’s playing a hot rabbi in Netflix’s Nobody Wants This. As a self-proclaimed non-believer, it would have been challenging to play such a role with conviction.
But, the 44-year-old star proves why he’s one of the greatest actors of this generation. He prepared for the project by actually visiting synagogues and attending a Shabbat service. He read a lot of books and listened to a lot of podcasts. He took time to check out documentaries and films that tackle Jewish history. Brody revealed he also went to a Shabbat dinner.
In his interview with Variety, the California native shared, “I really went to school. It was very fun. It was very interesting, and I’m a lot wiser for it.” He admitted the experience expanded his knowledge of the Torah and the Holocaust studies. He also called his education on the subject “very illuminating.”
Brody keeps an open mind when it comes to the roles he plays on the screen. Despite admitting he isn’t religious in any shape or form, he still wants to be a “student of history, of culture, of stories, of myth and literature.” The Lovelace star shared he has his own way of looking at the world through a romantic lens, so he isn’t completely rejecting all religious principles.
The actor was drawn to the role because he isn’t your ordinary rabbi. Later on, he realizes that Noah is a deeply religious person whom Brody has to embody because that’s his job as an actor. In the end, he only wants to do a great performance and make Jewish people feel proud.
