Before marrying Nick Cannon in 2008, she was previously married to American businessman Tommy Mottola. While the duo separated in 1998, in a past interview, she detailed how Mottola went into a blind rage when she took rapper Diddy’s side.
When Mariah Carey’s Stand for Diddy Caused Drama With Tommy Mottola
American rapper Diddy is in a slew of controversies at the moment, which in return has brought back several interviews featuring him. In one such chitchat, Mariah Carey was seen defending the infamous rapper against her husband at the time, Tommy Mottola. Interestingly, Carey and Diddy shared a great musical camaraderie with each other in the 1990s.

Not only that, but she was also not afraid to praise him openly, which was the reason why she had a huge verbal spat with Mottola at the same time. In one such heated conversation, her ex-husband made some not-so-subtle remarks about Diddy and his career. Carey was upset by this and felt the need to stand up to Mottola, telling him his remarks were racist. She also said:
Tommy had shared his own opinion with me and my nephew Shawn: ‘Puffy will be shining my shoes in two years. I was stunned. Wait. What did he say? (Further) It was one of the very few times I stood up to Tommy, telling him that what he had said was blatantly racist. I was pissed.
This honest answer made Mottola very angry. He stormed out of the restaurant, pacing back and forth and shocking everyone at the table. When he returned, he slammed his fist on the table and announced that Thanksgiving was canceled.
After Carey and Mottola separated, rumors started that she was dating Diddy. In an interview, she jokingly dismissed these rumors while expressing her admiration for him. She made it clear that they were not together and wanted the rumors to stop.

But after this relationship, the host also fathered 10 more children with different women. On the same topic, in an interview, he was asked what his ex-wife Carey thought about him fathering so many kids. He said:
She’s high frequency. She always asks me, ‘You aight? How you doin’? You handling it all? She’s like, ‘As long as you don’t bring none of that bull—- to the Manor of Carey. (Further) She lives in her own world, nothing can infiltrate that stuff. When we talk daily, she’s just checking on my spirit.
Cannon also talked about his relationship with his ex-wife and cleared up some rumors. In the same interview, he mentioned the false rumors that Carey was trying to take custody of their twins. Further, he shared a funny moment from a dinner they had just the night before the rumors began, where he wondered if something had happened that he wasn’t aware of.
Even though they divorced nearly seven years ago, they still keep in touch and support each other.
