It has been revealed that legendary actor Christopher Lee spent his final night watching The Lord of the Rings.
In a new documentary from Sky, The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee, the actor’s family discussed how he spent his final hours before passing away at the age of 93.
The Lord of the Rings will be back on the big screen in a new anime adaptation The War of the Rohirrim
Lee’s son-in-law, Juan Aneiros, described how Lee decided to watch The Lord of the Rings because he wanted to “watch (it) with the nurses. I’ll explain how the movie (was made).”
The idea was to spend some time in happy memories, passing on that happiness to those taking care of him.
“He loved that movie,” said Aneiros.
Christopher Lee led a long and famed life spanning decades in film where he played some of the most iconic roles on the big screen.
Of course, he played Saruman in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, but we also know him as Count Dooku in Star Wars, and he played one of the most monstrous villains in Dracula.
Lee was the only member of the cast or crew on The Lord of the Rings who actually got to meet the author of the books, J.R.R. Tolkien, in the 1950s.
Lee was already in love with the books and was eager to play the part of Gandalf when it came to shooting Jackson’s movies.
Of course, that part had already gone to Sir Ian McKellen, but Lee lit up the screen as one of the main antagonists of the trilogy.
After watching The Lord of the Rings that night, Christopher Lee passed away from heart failure.
Aneiros comments further on Lee’s passing, saying, “I actually thought he was eternal. I thought he would go past 100, I really did think so, so it was a shock…but he just passed away… It was peaceful, he didn’t suffer, he just went to sleep.”
