We continue our Cate Cannes-watch – or is it our Cannes Cate-watch? – with two ensembles, each of which seem slightly unusual for Good Lady Cate.

If you’d asked us who among the stars would be most likely to show up at any event in Cannes wearing head-to-denim and bright white kicks, we doubt her name would ever come up. The loose threads hanging off the embroidery is deeply annoying, but the overall look is pretty great on her. Love the frames.

Okay, so first things first: MUCH has been made of this dress, with many people assuming that Cate was making some sort of statement in solidarity with the people of Palestine, given that the Palestinian flag is red, white, black and green. Anything’s possible, although the attempt is so timid and so easily denied that we don’t buy it. Why make a political statement if half the people can’t tell if you’re even making one? There’s also the likelihood that the dress is actually pink, black and green. Again, it’s possible the white part is reflecting the red carpet, but those shoes are decidedly pink in tone and various Instagram pictures are inconclusive. As we keep saying, it’s possible she was making a statement, but we really don’t think so, given the details.
As for those details, it’s a pretty great dress on its own merits. The “shoulder necklace” has been made from “repurposed” pearls, but that just means someone took an existing necklace and modified it. It’s more interesting from the back than the front, because it interferes with the bustline.
