Speaking with Netflix ahead of the release of The Diplomat season 2, Cahn explained Kate’s biggest challenge going forward will be investigating the Prime Minister in secret to ensure he’s brought to justice. In addition, the series creator indicated there might be another death associated with the car bombing, something else the show’s lead will have to contend with as the next episodes unfold. Check out what Cahn had to say below:
Season 1 ended with Kate’s (Keri Russell) realization that the attack on a British warship [that] brought her to the UK wasn’t the work of a hostile nation — it was the British prime minister. Now she has to prove it.
The US and the UK don’t spy on each other. In fact, they share all their intelligence. So how do you investigate the PM? Who do you trust?
Kate’s colleagues and her almost-ex-husband (Rufus Sewell) are victims of a politically motivated attack in London that takes some lives and shatters the rest. The marriage she thought was over, the relationship she thought was beginning … all of it, in pieces.
How Will Kate’s Investigation Play Out In The Diplomat Season 2?
The Diplomat season 2 is likely going to be more dangerous for Kate than ever before, as her and Austin Dennison are now aware the Prime Minister can no longer be trusted. This coupled with the potentially devastating loss of Hal means her job of going after Trowbridge might become personal, leading to an even more intense batch of episodes. Since there’s still plenty for her and her allies to uncover, the real meat of the season will likely be her trying to fully understand the breadth of influence the PM has, and his ultimate goals.
One of the biggest mysteries that could be tied to Kate’s investigation is The Diplomat‘s Dolphin 3-6 transmission at the end of season 1. This appears to be someone from the British military whose communications are upended, potentially setting the stage for season 2’s next big event. Since the PM can no longer be trusted, his handling of the forthcoming situation could be just what the protagonist needs to prove his atrocities to the world.
From what Cahn said, it appears the intersection between Kate’s personal and professional lives is about to come to a head, leading to an even more intense investigation than season 1. Since The Diplomat has already been full of surprises as the story has unfolded, season 2 is bound to be no different with the shocking events it winds up focusing on. With so many attributes of the conspiracy now unfolding, it seems Kate is going to have her work cut out for her in the new episodes.
