According to One Theory, Chris Evans' Role in 'Doomsday' Is Panfully Obvious

Chris Evans is reportedly set to put on the Captain America suit again in the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday, though Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed it yet. The news, first reported by The Wrap, has raised some eyebrows, especially since Steve Rogers’ last appearance seemed to mark the end of his journey as the First Avenger.

After Endgame, Steve was older, retired, and living a peaceful life—definitely not in any shape to lead the Avengers. However, this return isn’t likely to undo Steve’s peaceful ending. The key here is that Avengers: Doomsday is being directed by the Russo brothers, who previously wrapped up Steve’s story in a way that felt final and respectful.

They won’t want to undermine that. So, what’s their plan for bringing Steve back? The multiverse, of course, as you might have guessed.

It’s safe to assume that Evans will be playing a version of Captain America from a different universe. This alternate version could exist in a reality where things turned out differently—possibly with a much darker path.

Some theories suggest this version of Steve might have died during the Chitauri invasion, which could have driven Tony Stark to become the villain we know as Doom. Another possibility is that this version of Tony was always bad and could have even been the one to kill Steve.

This storyline, especially with the character of Doom, may not have been Marvel’s original plan, though. As we know, Avengers: Doomsday was initially set to focus on Kang as the main villain, but with those plans falling through, Marvel has had to make a shift.

The film now has to quickly establish Doom as a credible threat, and using a flashback with this alternate Cap and Tony might help to explain the stakes without needing to spend too much time on it. By bringing in Steve for a quick but impactful flashback, Marvel can show how Doom’s world diverged from the main timeline.

It’s likely that Evans’ return will be limited to just a brief appearance, and don’t expect him to be a main player in the film. This is just a way to show the audience what went wrong in this alternate universe. After all, Steve’s retirement story in Endgame is a hard act to follow.

This could be a one-off appearance, leaving us to wonder how much Steve will actually return for Secret Wars, which will likely have a very different story. Fans of the MCU can look forward to seeing how it all plays out, but for now, it seems that Captain America will be more of a nostalgic cameo than a key figure in the upcoming film.
