Before Gladiator 2, Denzel Washington’s Highest Grossing Movie Came 17 Years Ago: Why the 2x Oscar Winner Has Never Been a Box Office King

Denzel Washington is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most respected actors. Having built a grand career defined by powerhouse performances and critical acclaim, his influence expands beyond domestic boundaries. Yet, despite all the fame he has achieved, the actor has never been a box office king, like his contemporaries.

Recently, his collaboration with Ridley Scott has made it to the top of his list when it comes to his highest box office gross. On the other hand, his second-highest film was also a Scott-helmed film, released 17 years ago.

Real talent is not acquired but inherent and this statement could not hold more true when it comes to Denzel Washington. Since the start of his career, the actor has consistently delivered outstanding performances one after the other even though not all of his films have been box office successes.

His role in Gladiator 2 is just another entry into his brilliant filmography and is now his highest-grossing film of all time. Currently having accumulated a worldwide gross of $320 million (via The Numbers), Washington’s role as the scheming Macrinus is being considered the best part of the film, generating significant Oscar buzz for the two-time Oscar winner.

Coincidentally, his second highest-grossing film, released 17 years ago, was also helmed by Ridley Scott. Released in 2007, American Gangster has a lifetime gross of $267 million. His other successful movies include Safe House, which earned $207 million; Philadelphia at $201 million and The Equalizer franchise, all three films grossed more than $190 million worldwide (via The Numbers).

Apart from Washington, Gladiator 2 also stars actors like Paul Mescal in the lead, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Connie Nielsen. Still in theatres, Gladiator 2 might even overtake American Gangster as the highest-grossing film in Washington in the domestic territory.

Even though not all of Denzel Washington’s films have been box office successes, the majority of his movies have been profitable, grossing more than their budgets. Yet, the actor has not been a huge box-office success when compared to the rest of his contemporaries like Kevin Costner, Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson, Samuel L. Jackson, and more.

While his contemporaries have had their films grossing generally more than $300 million, Washington’s films have not been as successful despite being in profit. The reason for this is that the actor rather focuses on films made for mature audiences, generally containing a dramatic and nuanced flare instead of being poised as huge blockbusters.

The nine-time Oscar-nominated actor does not tend to go for star-driven and franchise movies but rather picks roles that showcase his range and challenge his acting abilities. This is the reason that almost all of his roles have been critically acclaimed even if the film did not end up being profitable. Even with the lack of chart-topping blockbusters, his career has remained consistent for the past 3 decades or so.

Even with The Equalizer franchise, they weren’t huge box office draws yet grossed more than $190 million at the global box office (via The Numbers), which proves the consistency of his career and audience trust in him. Thus, instead of mass-market appeal, his filmography leans heavily toward intense dramas (Training DayFences), socially conscious stories (Malcolm XGlory), and character-driven thrillers (The Equalizer series).

Not a conventional hero, Denzel Washington’s career choices are the reason he is now considered a Hollywood legend. An actor who chooses to focus on the quality of his work rather than chasing box office dominance is the reason he is an unparalleled cultural and cinematic icon. With several more movies to come, including Black Panther 3, we expect the actor will continue on his path of delivering exceptional performances and we can hardly wait to see what else he has in store for us.

Gladiator 2 is in theatres now.
