Astro Bot reminds us of how fun video games can be, and it’s undoubtedly worthy of being a Game of the Year contender.
The arrival and success of Astro Bot is nothing short of historically important. In 2024, PlayStation fans can safely admit that there’s a title that’s not only a console-seller but also a contender for one of the best platformers ever made.
Several factors make Astro Bot such an instant hit, but all of them lead to one goal: simplicity. The game’s easy-to-understand mechanics and nostalgic charm are part of the process, and here’s why it’s likely going to be a Game of the Year (GOTY) 2024 contender.
The Charm of Childlike Platformers

Often in our attempt to embrace the struggles of adulthood, we rely on the nostalgic comforts of childhood. That’s where Astro Bot does its magic. It thrives on simple gameplay mechanics that keep you engaged for hours on end, making you forget about life for a while.
If game designers had the power to create a persona with the most charming and witty traits, it’d probably be a platformer. Most games in this genre are easy on the eyes, and simple to understand yet hold layers of complexity. Astro Bot is an inspired game that quickly pulls you in and shows you how approachable it is.
Regardless of how old you are, Astro Bot will likely catch your attention. Like many other platformers, the game has the appeal of bright and colorful worlds, with a tinge of PlayStation nostalgia for some of us who’ve been here since the PS1 era.
A Video Game, Finally!

In 2024, anything and everything can be related to a video game. A TV Show adaptation of a PlayStation hit, or a movie that could, unsurprisingly, cater to everyone but gamers. Or perhaps, a collaboration between franchises that have little in common (looking at you Fortnite).
Games have been a topic of discussion so inclusive in nature, that it’s easy to forget why they’re fun in the first place.
To add to this confusion, modern-day video games are pretty much cinematic masterpieces. With endless cutscenes as promotional content and characters who breathe life into the game’s universe, what’s not to adore? Yet, why is it that modern games don’t feel as “fun” anymore to so many people?
Well, here’s where Astro Bot soothes us. It jumps and dives into everything that makes a video game enjoyable. Especially a focus on “play” that ensures that players are constantly engaging in an activity that’s rewarding, adventurous, and dynamic. This is also the reason why every level in Astro Bot feels so unique and holds such a high replayability factor.
Game of the Year 2024 Worthy?

When a game “gets it”, it also gets recognition for it. So far, Astro Bot has been nonchalantly celebrating the art of video games, without making it complicated. Forming a unique identity that represents an entire gaming platform is no easy feat, but this one seems to be doing it.
Moreover, Astro Bot significantly impacts gaming culture as a whole. For many years, PlayStation has entertained millions of players worldwide, and the game celebrates this by featuring iconic characters and mechanics that have made several PlayStation titles popular in the past.
Regardless of it being an exclusive title, the game cradles an important home in the heart of gamers who have longed for something simple, fun, and memorable. As it happens, we tend to live in times when video games have often become larger than the sum of their parts, sometimes forgetting their very purpose.
Fortunately, Astro Bot wondrously builds on the foundations of everything that can win a GOTY 2024 award, and it won’t be surprising to notice a shift in focus towards more simplistic games coming from the most creative minds in the industry.
