Tom Cruise’s anticipated return film at Warner Bros. takes a major step in the right direction. The upcoming collaboration between Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu gets an important progress update.

According to Variety, the untitled Warner Bros. movie is set to begin principal photography in the U.K. as early as next month. The news comes after the film confirmed its star-studded cast this past summer, including Oscar-nominated Anatomy of a Fall star Sandra Hüller, Breaking Bad and Killers of the Flower Moon‘s Jesse Plemons, Emmy-winning Roseanne actor John Goodman and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ Michael Stuhlbarg. Everything Now‘s Sophie Wilde and Academy Award winner Riz Ahmed have also been tapped to star in the project.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment confirmed the untitled Cruise project in February, directed and produced by Iñárritu from a script he co-wrote with fellow Birdman scribes, Nicolas Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris, along with Sabina Berman. For Iñárritu, the flick will be his first English-language feature-length project since The Revenant, in 2016. He won back-to-back Best Director Academy Awards for Birdman and The Revenant, though his sole film release since the latter was the 2022 Mexican psychological black comedy-drama, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths.

Tom Cruise Makes a Big Comeback to Warner Bros.

Cruise inked a strategic film partnership deal with Warner Bros. in February, returning to the studio that saw him make noteworthy projects such as The Last SamuraiRisky Business and Edge of Tomorrow. Warner Bros. executives have reportedly been pushing for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel since Cruise’s return, with the Hollywood legend hinting at being open to the idea while recently celebrating the original flick’s 10th anniversary. The deal will see Cruise lead various franchise and original projects.

Despite Cruise’s new deal with Warner Bros., it won’t interfere with his work at Paramount Pictures. Cruise has been in the U.K. filming Mission: Impossible 8, the latest installment of his iconic action series, with franchise director Christopher McQuarrie hinting at more sequels beyond the upcoming one. He is also set to feature in an upcoming space movie helmed by Doug Liman, making him the first civilian to do a space walk outside the International Space Station. There is also the anticipated Top Gun 3, which is in early development at Paramount following the strong success of 2022’s Maverick.
