In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Jonas Pate, Shannon Burke, and Josh Pate talked about the ending of part 1 and what is expected for the upcoming rest of the season. In general, the showrunners shared that the season 4 finale is the best episode of the series and teased a new “big” story that will impact the characters’ relationships. Read their full quotes below:
JONAS: Definitely the best episode we’ve ever done is the finale. We’re very proud of the ending and excited to share it.
SHANNON: The second half of the season is the best half of a season we’ve ever done. There’s at least one other really big story as well, which…
JOSH: Comes later. We’re trying to find new challenges for the couples. We’re not telling falling in love stories anymore or love triangle stories because all the characters are happily with their significant other, so we have to find new obstacles to throw at them, and that’s what, really, we were trying to explore. How do we keep the romance stories moving forward? So we focused a lot on that too.
The creators were also asked about the major cliffhanger, concerning the fate of Sarah and Pope, who are trapped in a tomb as the water level rises. They responded that the stakes were higher and advised viewers to worry about all the other characters as well.
JOSH: I think you should be worried about everybody. I would say worry.
SHANNON: Expect more emotional high stakes.
JOSH: They’re really in a pickle in the second half. And the stakes are higher. The adventure they go on is probably my favorite. They do some globetrotting that takes them further afield than they’ve ever been, where they’re really, really out of their comfort zone, and it just makes for a really dramatic, explosive story in the second half. We’ll have the biggest [action scenes] we’ve ever had. The scope of it is enormous.
SHANNON: It’s almost like a double album. The first half is Pogue-y fun, and then the second half is more stakes, more emotion, more adventure than we’ve ever had.
What We Can Expect From The Upcoming Part 2
No One Is Safe
It’s clear that the second half of Outer Banks season 4 will be raising the stakes higher than ever before. With Pope and Sarah’s lives hanging in the balance, survival may not be guaranteed, and potential unexpected losses could alter the story’s trajectory. Moving beyond the typical love triangles, the showrunners are teasing that the characters will face new challenges in their relationships, forcing them to adapt and mature. For instance, JJ’s identity twist could impact his relationship with Pouges, especially given his feelings about the Kooks.
The promise of globetrotting adventures also signals that the Pogues will wander far beyond their comfort zone, diving into riskier terrain and coming across larger-scale threats. The creators have also emphasized that the next portion of the season will feel very distinct from the first half, which leaned into the classic “Pogue-y” fun the viewers love. These elements might elevate the show’s narrative to a new level, resulting in what the creators are teasing as the most dramatic and action-packed season of Outer Banks yet.
Our Take On Outer Banks Season 4 Part 2 Teases
Nothing Is Off The Table
The creators tease that part 2 is more than just a continuation. There is a dramatic evolution, with high-stakes romance, nerve-racking new storylines, and globetrotting adventures. For now, it all indicates that this has the potential to be the show’s most ambitious narrative yet, giving viewers something to look forward to as the season unfolds.
Outer Banks season 4, part 2 premieres November 7 on Netflix.
