Keanu Reeves is due to turn 58 years old this coming September, and he has yet to get married. While that would ordinarily be seen as painting him in something of an anti-family light, the reality appears to be significantly different on the ground.
Reeves has been in the public eye since he was a fresh-faced, early 20s TV star in the ‘80s. In that time, he has been in a number of known relationships, including with British-Chinese model and actress China Chow as well as Brenda Davis, who is a long-time close friend of the John Wick actor.
Over the years, Reeves has also been rumored to be involved with various other women, including Charlize Theron, Cameron Diaz and Winona Ryder, whom some even claimed he was secretly married to.
Currently, Reeves is seeing visual artist Alexandra Grant. Although fans have also speculated that the two are married, their relationship is yet to take that direction.
In terms of his own family growing up, Reeves is quite close to his mother, Patricia Taylor. It is another story, altogether, with his father, Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr.
Keanu Reeves’ Mother Has Been Married Four Times
Keanu Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon, where his mother Patricia Taylor – a costume designer and performer by profession – was working at the time. Patricia had met Keanu’s father, a Hawaiian geologist by the name Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr. in the same country.
The two got married, and spent a few years together, until their divorce in 1966, when Reeves Jr. abandoned her and their son. Keanu was barely three at the time, and he moved with his mother for a while to Sydney, Australia.
As Patricia continued to globetrot in the course of her work, Keanu also spent various spells of his childhood in New York City, and eventually in Yorkville, Toronto.
After her split from Keanu’s father, Patricia got married three more times. She first tied the knot to a Broadway and Hollywood director called Paul Aaron in 1970, during her time in New York. This relationship barely lasted, as they got divorced the following year.
Patricia later got married to a rock music promoter called Robert Miller, and then to a hairdresser from Pennsylvania, called Jack Bond.
What Happened Between Keanu Reeves And His Father, Samuel Reeves Jr.?
A major contributor to Keanu’s estrangement from his dad is the criminal activities that the older Reeves was involved in. Samuel Reeves Jr. was arrested for drug possession in the mid ‘90s, and in fact spent a few years behind bars.
Keanu was interviewed by Chris Heath of Rolling Stone in 2000, where they spoke at length about his father and his trouble with the law. Nine years earlier, the two had also had a similar conversation, where the actor referred to his relationship with his father as ‘pretty heavy’ and ‘full of pain and woe and f****** loss and all that shit.’
In the later conversation, Keanu reiterated the sentiment that in his eyes, his relationship with his father was beyond repair.
Keanu Reeves Is Not Looking For A Reunion With His Father
When asked by Chris Heath in the Rolling Stone interview what trouble his father had encountered with the authorities and how he dealt with it, Keanu Reeves was candid and precise: “It’s his life, man. I hope he’s well. Whatever that means.”
They were the words of someone not seeking any kind of reconciliation, something which Samuel Reeves Jr. confirmed in his own, much more recent interview with a media outlet.
“I pretty much know what he’s doing, but he’s made it clear that he wants nothing to do with me,” he said of his son to the Daily Mirror in June 2020.
Despite the pain of being unable to reach his son, Reeves Jr. insisted that Keanu will always have a special place in his heart. “I’m embarrassed by it all,” he revealed. “Keanu said my life was tragic and, oh boy, does that hurt! Sad, yeah? I never figured things would end up this way. But he’ll always be my boy.”
Keanu has remained close to his mother, and has brought her to a number of his red carpet events over the years.
