Lilia Calderu as a young and older woman in Agatha All Along episode 7Lilia Calderu referenced seven tarot cards over the course of Agatha All Along, with episode 7, “Death’s Hand in Mine,” finally confirming their importance and full meaning. Following episode 6’s exploration of Billy Maximoff’s new origin story in the MCU, Agatha All Along episode 7 featured the long-awaited next trial on the Witches’ Road. The Road’s fourth trial focused on Patti LuPone’s Sicilian witch, Lilia Calderu, connecting the visions and premonitions she has experienced throughout the series, and delivering her a satisfying and emotional ending after centuries of turmoil and confusion.

Since Lilia Calderu’s specialty is divination, her trial on the Witches’ Road involved her reading someone’s tarot cards, in this case, her own, divining both her past and her future. Agatha All Along episode 7 confirmed that all of Lilia Calderu’s visions were connected, as she experienced time out of a chronological sequence, and this contributed to her mentioning several tarot cards over the course of the series. Each of these cards proved pivotal to completing Lilia’s trial, carrying deep meanings that reference each member of the rag-tag coven of witches in Agatha All Along.

Lilia Calderu Is The Queen Of Cups

“Empathetic, Intuitive, Inner Voice To Be Trusted.”

The first card that Lilia Calderu pulls during her trial on the Witches’ Road refers to herself, the Traveler, and is the Queen of Cups. The Queen of Cups refers to a supportive, intuitive, caring and nurturing figure, which Lilia certainly fulfilled during her time on the Road. The Queen of Cups symbolizes the thoughts that come with the unconscious mind, bridging the gap between thought and feeling, and also refers to serenity and calmness. These are qualities that Lilia acquires in her final moments as she fills in the gaps in her history.

The image on the Queen of Cups in Agatha All Along is that of Lilia Calderu as a young woman. Agatha All Along episode 7 revealed more about her history in Sicily after episode 3, “Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials,” first teased it with the hallucination of Lilia’s long-dead Maestra. Instead of sitting on a throne by the sea as is custom, Agatha All Along’s Queen of Cups sits at a round table in front of a castle, just as Lilia does. Despite these differences, Lilia exhibits all the qualities of the Queen of Cups perfectly.

The Coven Is The Three Of Pentacles

“Collaboration, Community, Singular Voices Waiting To Harmonize.”

The Three of Pentacles is described on Lilia Calderu’s “Safe Passage” spread as What’s Missing. Lilia first mentioned the Three of Pentacles in Agatha All Along episode 2, “Circle Sewn With Fate, Unlock Thy Hidden Gate,” when she wrote a list of names for Agatha Harkness and Billy Maximoff to recruit for their new coven. Lilia describes the Three of Pentacles as referring to collaboration and community, while it also carries meanings of pooled energy and knowledge, teamwork and shared goals, which is the perfect representation of the entire coven.

Lilia Calderu’s Maestra berates her for not having a coven in Agatha All Along episode 7’s historical scenes, but Lilia soon realizes that she is happy to have finally found a coven of powerful and personable witches. The names she originally suggested as her perfect coven were Agatha Harkness, Lilia herself, Jennifer Kale, Alice Wu-Gulliver and a black heart, which was revealed to be Billy Maximoff. The appearance of the Three of Pentacles also meant that Lilia was comfortable enough to sacrifice herself to save her newfound sisterhood.

Alice Wu-Gulliver Is The Knight Of Wands

“Full Of Fire, Fights Bravely.”

Knight of Wands in Agatha All Along episode 7-1 Alice firing power at Agatha Harkness in Agatha All Along episode 5 Alice alive in Agatha All Along episode 8 or 9 Alice fighting her curse in Agatha All Along episode 4 Alice being killed by Agatha in Agatha All Along episode 5Knight of Wands in Agatha All Along episode 7-1 Alice firing power at Agatha Harkness in Agatha All Along episode 5 Alice alive in Agatha All Along episode 8 or 9 Alice fighting her curse in Agatha All Along episode 4 Alice being killed by Agatha in Agatha All Along episode 5

The third tarot card picked by Lilia in Agatha All Along episode 7 is the Knight of Wands, referred to as the Path Behind. While Lilia describes the Knight of Wands as “full of fire, fights bravely,” this doesn’t really do the card justice. The Knight of Wands refers to courage, energy, heroism, rebelliousness and a hot temper, making Alice Wu-Gulliver the perfect recipient of this card. The Knight of Wands is quick to jump into action, just as Alice did to save Agatha Harkness in Agatha All Along episode 5, “Darkest Hour, Wake Thy Power.”

Alice’s death in Agatha All Along episode 5 and the other witches’ quick acceptance of it pushed Billy Maximoff to finally reveal his identity to the coven, throwing Agatha, Lilia and Jennifer off the Witches’ Road using a sudden outburst of magic.

Lilia Calderu first mentions the Knight of Wands when Alice jumps into action to save Agatha from her possession in Agatha All Along episode 5. Episode 7 also explained that this was the moment that Lilia was seeing when she stated “Alice, don’t…” in episode 4, and “try to save Agatha” in episode 3, which gives these flashes an even more tragic meaning. Alice hastily fighting to save Agatha culminated in her demise, as Agatha inadvertently absorbed her power and life force, which fights against the idea of the Knight of Wands being charged up and full of life.

Jennifer Kale Is The High Priestess

“Immense Spiritual Power, Unable Or Unwilling To Use It.”

The Path Ahead, the next card in Lilia Calderu’s “Safe Passage” spread, refers to Jennifer Kale. This slot on the spread correlates to a space for growth and discovery, which is exactly Jennifer’s purpose on the Witches’ Road, as she hopes to grow as a witch and rediscover her power. The High Priestess usually refers to spirituality, listening to the inner voice and harboring a huge amount of power, but also positive and negative juxtaposition. This perhaps informs Lilia’s mention that Jennifer is “unable or unwilling” to use her power, commenting on her being bound.

Jennifer mentioned in Agatha All Along episode 4, “If I Can’t Reach You, Let My Song Teach You,” that she was bound without magic by a mysterious man who lured her into a trap. The minutiae of Jennifer’s binding are yet to be revealed, but relating her to the High Priestess, which Lilia did immediately when meeting her in episode 2, suggests her true power is almost incomprehensible. The High Priestess serves as a mediator between the depths of reality, making her role on the ever-extending Witches’ Road crucial.

Agatha Harkness Is The Three Of Swords

“Heartbreak, Sorrow, Grief.”

After the Path Ahead is Obstacles, which sees Lilia Calderu examine the Three of Swords, which she refers to Agatha Harkness’ own “heartbreak, sorrow [and] grief.” The Three of Swords usually depicts the image of a heart stabbed with three blades, which mirrors the image of Agatha Harkness in front of three crossed tree branches while worried about Billy Maximoff’s injuries in Agatha All Along episode 4. The Three of Swords is one of the most emotional and heartbreaking tarot cards, referencing immense trauma and sadness.

It seemed as though Agatha Harkness believed Billy Maximoff to be her son, Nicholas, when he was injured in Agatha All Along episode 4, as she was uncharacteristically worried about “Teen,” and urged Rio Vidal not to take him, teasing her outing as Lady Death.

This is perfectly reflected in Agatha Harkness in the MCU, as she has experienced huge trauma through the mysterious loss of her son, Nicholas Scratch. She has also killed hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent people, which has certainly taken a toll on her, despite her calm and confident demeanor. There is little that is positive about the Three of Swords, and seemingly little that is positive about Agatha Harkness’ own journey, but the sorrow carried in this card could convince the coven that she is, in fact, not at all malicious.

Billy Maximoff Is The Tower Reversed

“Disaster, Destruction, Sudden Upheaval, But Reversed, It Means Miraculous Transformation.”

The Tower reversed in Agatha All Along episode 7 Billy Maximoff in Wiccan's crown in Agatha All Along episode 5 William Kaplan with the Tower in Agatha All Along episode 6 Billy Maximoff as Maleficent in Agatha All Along episode 7 Billy Maximoff in the crystal ball with reversed tarot cards in Agatha All Along episode 6The Tower reversed in Agatha All Along episode 7 Billy Maximoff in Wiccan's crown in Agatha All Along episode 5 William Kaplan with the Tower in Agatha All Along episode 6 Billy Maximoff as Maleficent in Agatha All Along episode 7 Billy Maximoff in the crystal ball with reversed tarot cards in Agatha All Along episode 6

First mentioned in Agatha All Along episode 6, “Familiar By Thy Side,” the Tower is a very important tarot card that refers to disaster, destruction, sudden change and huge upheaval. However, Lilia Calderu doesn’t pick out the upright Tower, but instead the Tower reversed as the Windfall. Inverted, the Tower means the opposite: averting disaster, delaying the inevitable, resisting change and transformation. This is the perfect card to mirror Billy Maximoff’s new story in Agatha All Along, as he inhabits the body of the now-deceased William Kaplan, marking his magic change.

Agatha All Along episode 5 confirmed that Joe Locke is playing the son of the Scarlet Witch in the MCU, returned despite his apparent demise in WandaVision’s finale. The significance of the Tower, particularly when reversed, means that Billy has gone through a huge transformation, but the Tower’s negative impact may still be looming. For Lilia Calderu, turning the card upright allowed her to sacrifice herself to spare her coven from the Salem Seven, certainly bringing about a sudden change and upheaval.

Rio Vidal Is Death

Agatha All Along Episode 7 Confirmed A Wild Death Theory

One of the wildest reveals in Agatha All Along episode 7 was the outing of Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal as Lady Death, confirming a huge and popular theory that has persisted throughout the series. The Death tarot card is pulled by Lilia Calderu as the Destination, which she becomes aware of thanks to a flashback which saw her met by Lady Death underneath the Witches’ Road. On the surface, Death is a self-explanatory tarot card, but it also carries meanings of transformation, change, transition and letting go, which is exactly what Lilia does in episode 7.

Thankfully, Lilia Calderu doesn’t die without first letting the coven know that Rio Vidal is Lady Death, although Agatha Harkness could have done this herself back in episode 2. With the Salem Seven defeated, or at least maimed, it seems Lady Death will become the new primary antagonist of Agatha All Along, not only Lilia Calderu’s Destination, but perhaps the last face other members of the coven will see, too. Lilia’s death was incredibly emotional, but cathartic, but Lady Death’s role in the remaining episodes of Agatha All Along will likely be much more intense.
