Emma Roberts has been accused of creating a hostile work environment by her American Horror Story co-star Angelica Ross. Roberts first debuted on season 3 (Coven) of the anthology series, which tells a different self-contained story every season, going on to appear in seasons 4 (Freak Show), 7 (Cult), 8 (Apocalypse), 9 (1984) and the upcoming season 12 (Delicate). Ross made her American Horror Story debut in 1984 after working with co-creator Ryan Murphy on the show Pose, going on to appear in season 10 (Double Feature).
On Instagram Live (as reposted on Twitter by @vee_delmonico99), Ross accused Roberts of transphobic behavior while on the set of American Horror Story season 9.
Ross, who is a trans woman, details a moment on set when she and Roberts had conflict, and they were told, “OK ladies, that’s enough.” Ross describes Roberts coyly turning away while saying, “Don’t you mean lady?” Ross, whose blood was “boiling,” but who had seen others receive “repercussions” for speaking out against Roberts’ on-set behavior, elected not to speak to her for the rest of the shoot. Read Ross’ statement below:
She’s in front of me, her back against the mirror. She goes, “John, Angelica’s being mean…” She’s not being for real, for real. And John is like, “OK ladies, that’s enough, let’s get back to work.”
And she then looks at me and she goes, “Don’t you mean lady?” and she turns around… and covers her mouth… I’m looking at her dead-ass in the camera like “what the f**k did you just say?”
…I’m trying to process what the f**k she just said… My blood is boiling… Because I’m like, if I say something, it’s gonna be me that’s the problem. And I know this because there was someone that spoke up about what she was doing, and they got repercussions from that…
So when I saw that happening, I was just like “I’m done.” I didn’t speak to that b***h the entire time after that.
Ross confirms that Roberts called and apologized for her behavior on American Horror Story: 1984’s set.
After Ross revealed details about Roberts’ transphobic behavior on the set of American Horror Story: 1984 , the actor provided an update. Ross confirms that Roberts reached out to her and apologized for her actions, admitting it ” was not that of an ally .” Read the tweet below:
Emma Roberts & American Horror Story Have A History of Controversies
This is not the first time that either Roberts or American Horror Story itself has landed in hot water. Roberts was involved in an incident in 2013 where she and her then-boyfriend, American Horror Story cast member Evan Peters, were said to have been hitting each other during an argument, and Roberts was arrested after Peters was discovered with a bloody nose. While she too was bruised, the bruises didn’t develop until later, by which point Peters had declined to press charges.
American Horror Story‘s bigger controversies have come more recently. Another recent statement from Ross claims that Ryan Murphy promised her a Black-led season, then ghosted her after backing out of that promise. It has also been rumored that Delicate was completed using scabs amid the ongoing dual writers and actors strikes, though due to conflicting early reports, it remains unclear to what degree the production did or did not honor the strikes.
These combined controversies, though many took place years in the past, could add up to some major consequences. Ross’ accusations are particularly timely, as Roberts is leading American Horror Story season 12, which premieres on FX on September 20. However, it remains to be seen if there will be a reckoning for any or all of these issues.
